Magic Beans are bought from one man and planted in 10 patches of soft soil while Link is a child. When you come back as an adult, each bean has grown into a broad leaf that lifts off when you step on it and carries you along a fixed route. Five Pieces of Heart and two Gold Skulltulas sit on those routes.

Where do you buy Magic Beans, and how much are they?

The Bean Seller sits by the fence at the entrance to Zora’s River, munching on his own stock. He is only there when Link is a child, and you need Bombs to break the boulders in front of the river, so the earliest you can shop is once you have the Bomb Bag from Dodongo’s Cavern.

He sells one bean at a time, and the price goes up by 10 Rupees with every sale.

All ten cost 550 Rupees. The wallet you start with holds 99, which is one short of the last bean, so pick up the Adult’s Wallet (10 tokens on the Gold Skulltulas checklist) before you try to buy the tenth.

To plant a bean, stand on a patch of soft soil and use the bean from a C Button, just like any other item. The first patch is right next to the seller.

3DS version: soft soil looks like this everywhere, a round patch of loose dark earth. This one is beside the Bean Seller.

Where are all 10 soft soil patches?

The Skulltula column is the one that crawls out of the soil when child Link drops bugs on it, numbered as on our Gold Skulltulas checklist. The Piece of Heart numbers match the Pieces of Heart checklist.

Patches 9 and 10 are the awkward pair. Child Link cannot reach either on foot, so both need a warp song, and Sheik only teaches warp songs to adult Link. See all ocarina songs for where to learn them.

Which bean plants do you actually need?

Step onto a grown plant and it carries you along a fixed route. Jump off when it passes the ledge you want.

  • Needed for a collectible: Death Mountain Trail (Piece of Heart #26), Death Mountain Crater (#27), Desert Colossus (#36) and the Lost Woods clearing (Gold Skulltula #48).
  • Useful, with a substitute: the graveyard (the Longshot also reaches Piece of Heart #18), Lake Hylia (the Scarecrow’s Song with the Hookshot also reaches #23), the Desert Colossus rock (the Longshot also reaches Gold Skulltula #93) and Zora’s River (the Hover Boots also reach #15).
  • Shortcuts only: the Lost Woods bridge and Gerudo Valley. The piece behind the Gerudo Valley waterfall can be reached by a ladder without the plant.
  • Just Rupees: Kokiri Forest.

3DS version: the Desert Colossus plant stops at a rock with a Gold Skulltula before it reaches the arch.

When is the best time to plant the beans?

You cannot finish the set before your first trip to the future, because two patches need songs only adult Link is taught. This order keeps the walking down:

  1. After Dodongo’s Cavern, buy eight beans. That is 360 Rupees, and no single bean costs more than the starting wallet holds. Catch a bottle of bugs on the way.
  2. Plant patches 1 to 8. At each one except Zora’s River, drop the bugs first, kill the Gold Skulltula, catch a bug again, then plant.
  3. Play through to the adult era. Learn the Bolero of Fire in Death Mountain Crater and the Requiem of Spirit at the Desert Colossus.
  4. Go back to childhood with the Adult’s Wallet. You have to return anyway for the Bottom of the Well and the child half of the Spirit Temple. Buy beans nine and ten (190 Rupees) and warp to patches 9 and 10.

If you would rather do it in one go, wait until step 4 and plant all ten then. Nothing is lost by planting late: the plant is there the next time you visit as an adult.

What changes for Magic Beans in the Switch 2 remake?

Nintendo has not mentioned Magic Beans. Two announced changes could affect how much you need them. Link can now jump freely and dash, where the Nintendo 64 original only jumped automatically at ledges, so some ledges a plant used to serve may be reachable another way. And time passes everywhere now, which matters for the two night-only Gold Skulltulas on plant routes. Soil locations, prices and routes on this page are from the original until we have checked them after launch. See every confirmed new feature.

よくある質問

How much do all the Magic Beans cost in Ocarina of Time?
550 Rupees. The first bean costs 10 Rupees and each one after that costs 10 more, so the tenth is 100. The starting wallet only holds 99, so you need the Adult's Wallet from 10 Gold Skulltula tokens to buy the last one.
Where do you buy Magic Beans?
From the Bean Seller sitting by the fence at the entrance to Zora's River, as a child. You need Bombs to clear the boulders in front of the river. He is not there when Link is an adult.
Can adult Link plant Magic Beans?
No. Soft soil patches only exist in the child era. Plant as a child, then return to the same spot as an adult to find the grown plant.
Which Magic Beans are worth planting?
Death Mountain Trail, Death Mountain Crater and the Desert Colossus each lead to a Piece of Heart, and the Lost Woods clearing leads to a Gold Skulltula. The graveyard and Lake Hylia plants are handy but can be replaced by the Longshot or the Scarecrow's Song. Kokiri Forest only gives Rupees.
Do you need all 10 beans for 100% completion?
You need the plants on Death Mountain Trail, in Death Mountain Crater, at the Desert Colossus and in the Lost Woods clearing. Planting all ten is the simple way to be sure, and nine of the ten soil patches also hide a Gold Skulltula that has nothing to do with the bean.
