Ocarina of Time Items and Upgrades: Every Location
Where to get every item in Ocarina of Time as child and adult Link, plus every upgrade: quiver, bomb bag, bullet bag, wallet, scales and gauntlets.
Most items in Ocarina of Time sit in a dungeon chest, so you get them by playing through the story. The capacity upgrades are different: every one is a side task, and none of them is handed to you. This page lists where each item comes from, split by age, and then every upgrade with what it takes.
Where do you get every item as child Link?
The order follows a normal playthrough. Dungeon names link to the page that shows the chest.
| Item | Where | How |
|---|---|---|
| Kokiri Sword | Kokiri Forest | Crawl through the small hole in the training area at the back of the forest and open the chest inside |
| Deku Shield | Kokiri Shop | 40 Rupees |
| Fairy Slingshot | Inside the Deku Tree | Dungeon chest. Comes with a bag for 30 Deku Seeds |
| Fairy Ocarina | Bridge out of Kokiri Forest | Saria gives it to you when you leave after the Deku Tree |
| Hylian Shield | Castle Town Bazaar, or Kakariko Graveyard | 80 Rupees in the Bazaar, or free from a chest under one of the graves at night |
| Goron’s Bracelet | Goron City | Play Zelda’s Lullaby at Darunia’s door, then Saria’s Song for him |
| Bomb Bag | Dodongo’s Cavern | Dungeon chest. Holds 20 Bombs |
| Magic meter | Great Fairy at the top of Death Mountain Trail | Bomb the wall at the summit and play Zelda’s Lullaby inside |
| Din’s Fire | Great Fairy near Hyrule Castle | Bomb open the hidden fountain near the castle, then play Zelda’s Lullaby |
| Silver Scale | Zora’s Domain | Win the Diving Game (20 Rupees): collect every Rupee before time runs out |
| Bottle | Four places | See all four bottles |
| Magic Beans | Zora’s River entrance | Bought one at a time from the Bean Seller. See Magic Beans |
| Boomerang | Inside Jabu-Jabu’s Belly | Dungeon chest |
| Farore’s Wind | Great Fairy in Zora’s Fountain | Bomb the wall that hides the fountain and play Zelda’s Lullaby |
| Bombchus | Castle Town back alley | The Bombchu Shop opens at night. Bombchu Bowling and dungeon chests also give them |
| Ocarina of Time | Castle Town moat | Bring all three Spiritual Stones to the drawbridge, then pick it out of the water |
| Lens of Truth | Bottom of the Well | Needs the Song of Storms, which you learn as an adult first |
| Stone of Agony | House of Skulltula, Kakariko | Reward for 20 Gold Skulltula tokens (Shard of Agony on 3DS) |
The Hylian Shield is too big for child Link to hold up. He carries it on his back and ducks under it, so the Deku Shield stays the better choice until you grow up.
Where do you get every item as adult Link?
| Item | Where | How |
|---|---|---|
| Master Sword | Temple of Time | Open the Door of Time with the three Spiritual Stones and the Song of Time |
| Hookshot | Kakariko Graveyard | Pull back the grave with flowers in front of it and win Dampé’s race |
| Fairy Bow | Forest Temple | Dungeon chest. Comes with a quiver for 30 arrows |
| Goron Tunic | Goron City | Stop the rolling young Goron with a Bomb and talk to him. Also 200 Rupees in the Goron Shop |
| Megaton Hammer | Fire Temple | Dungeon chest |
| Double magic | Great Fairy in Death Mountain Crater | Break the boulders with the Megaton Hammer and play Zelda’s Lullaby |
| Iron Boots | Ice Cavern | Chest at the end |
| Zora Tunic | Zora’s Domain | Thaw King Zora with Blue Fire. Also 300 Rupees in the Zora Shop |
| Longshot | Water Temple | Chest after the fight with Dark Link |
| Fire Arrows | Lake Hylia | After the Water Temple refills the lake, stand on the plaque by the warp platform at sunrise and shoot an arrow at the sun. They land on the small island |
| Hover Boots | Shadow Temple | Dungeon chest |
| Gerudo’s Membership Card | Gerudo’s Fortress | Free all four carpenters |
| Ice Arrows | Gerudo Training Ground | Final chest of the optional mini-dungeon |
| Nayru’s Love | Great Fairy at the Desert Colossus | Bomb the cracked wall and play Zelda’s Lullaby |
| Silver Gauntlets | Spirit Temple | Found on the child half of the temple, worn only as an adult |
| Mirror Shield | Spirit Temple | Chest on the adult half |
| Light Arrows | Temple of Time | Zelda gives them to you once every Sage is awake |
| Golden Gauntlets | Inside Ganon’s Castle | Chest in the Shadow trial |
| Double defense | Great Fairy outside Ganon’s Castle | Lift the huge stone with the Golden Gauntlets and play Zelda’s Lullaby |
| Giant’s Knife | Goron City | 200 Rupees from Medigoron. It breaks after a handful of hits |
| Biggoron’s Sword | Death Mountain summit | End of the adult trading sequence. See the Biggoron’s Sword guide |
The six Great Fairy rewards in these two tables (the magic meter, the three spells, double magic and double defense) are covered one by one on the Great Fairy Fountains page.
Two of these catch people out. The Hookshot is not in a dungeon, and the Forest Temple cannot be reached without it. And the Fire Arrows only appear if you shoot the sun at Lake Hylia; nothing in the story sends you there.
Where are the capacity upgrades?
Each pair of upgrades can be done in either order. The first one you finish gives the middle size and the second gives the largest.
| What | Sizes | Upgrade 1 | Upgrade 2 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Deku Seed Bullet Bag | 30 → 40 → 50 | Lost Woods: from the entrance go right, and hit the centre of the hanging target three times in a row | Castle Town Shooting Gallery as a child: hit all 10 targets in one game |
| Quiver | 30 → 40 → 50 | Kakariko Shooting Gallery as an adult: hit all 10 targets in one game | Horseback Archery Range in Gerudo’s Fortress: 1,500 points |
| Bomb Bag | 20 → 30 → 40 | Goron City as a child: stop the big rolling Goron with a Bomb | Bombchu Bowling Alley in Castle Town: one of the prizes |
| Deku Sticks | 10 → 20 → 30 | Lost Woods: the Business Scrub below the bridge sells it for 40 Rupees | Forest Stage in the Lost Woods: walk in wearing the Skull Mask |
| Deku Nuts | 20 → 30 → 40 | Lost Woods: bomb the boulder by the Sacred Forest Meadow entrance and buy it from the Business Scrub in the grotto for 40 Rupees | Forest Stage: walk in wearing the Mask of Truth |
| Wallet | 99 → 200 → 500 | Adult’s Wallet: 10 Gold Skulltula tokens | Giant’s Wallet: 30 Gold Skulltula tokens |
| Diving | Silver Scale → Golden Scale | Diving Game in Zora’s Domain as a child | Fishing Pond at Lake Hylia as an adult: catch a fish of 13 pounds or more |
| Strength | Goron’s Bracelet → Silver Gauntlets → Golden Gauntlets | Spirit Temple, child half | Inside Ganon’s Castle, Shadow trial |
| Magic meter | Single → double | Great Fairy at the top of Death Mountain Trail | Great Fairy in Death Mountain Crater |
| Hookshot | Hookshot → Longshot | Dampé’s race in the graveyard | Water Temple |
A few notes on the fiddly ones:
- Horseback Archery. You need Gerudo’s Membership Card, Epona and the Fairy Bow, and the range is open in the daytime. A score of 1,000 gives a Piece of Heart; 1,500 gives the quiver.
- Bombchu Bowling. The prize changes from game to game, and the Bomb Bag and a Piece of Heart are both in the rotation. Keep playing until each comes up.
- The masks. The Skull Mask and the Mask of Truth both come from the Happy Mask Shop in Castle Town, which only child Link can use. The mask guide covers the whole chain.
- The wallets. You cannot hold more than 99 Rupees until you have 10 tokens. The Gold Skulltulas checklist has an easy first 10.
Which upgrades are worth getting early?
- Adult’s Wallet. Ten tokens is quick, and several things cost more than 99 Rupees: the tenth Magic Bean, both tunics in the shops and the Giant’s Knife.
- Bigger Bullet Bag from the Lost Woods. It is free, takes a minute, and is available as soon as you have the slingshot.
- Magic meter. Climb to the Great Fairy on Death Mountain right after Dodongo’s Cavern. Without it you cannot use Din’s Fire, the Lens of Truth or any magic arrow.
- Golden Scale. It reaches a Piece of Heart in the lakeside laboratory and another in a Hyrule Field grotto.
What changes for items in the Switch 2 remake?
Nintendo has announced two changes that touch items. You can swap weapons and items on the fly instead of going through the pause menu, and the slingshot, bow and similar tools can be aimed with motion controls. Nintendo has not said that any item or upgrade has moved. The list of announcements is in every confirmed new feature.
