Ocarina of Time Items and Upgrades: Every Location

Where to get every item in Ocarina of Time as child and adult Link, plus every upgrade: quiver, bomb bag, bullet bag, wallet, scales and gauntlets.

Most items in Ocarina of Time sit in a dungeon chest, so you get them by playing through the story. The capacity upgrades are different: every one is a side task, and none of them is handed to you. This page lists where each item comes from, split by age, and then every upgrade with what it takes.

The order follows a normal playthrough. Dungeon names link to the page that shows the chest.

3DS version: the Kokiri Sword comes from a chest past the crawl hole in Kokiri Forest.

The Hylian Shield is too big for child Link to hold up. He carries it on his back and ducks under it, so the Deku Shield stays the better choice until you grow up.

Young Link stands in the Castle Town Bazaar; a Hylian Shield, Bombs and a Recovery Heart sit on the shelves behind the shopkeeper
3DS version: the Castle Town Bazaar, with the Hylian Shield on the shelf behind the owner.

The six Great Fairy rewards in these two tables (the magic meter, the three spells, double magic and double defense) are covered one by one on the Great Fairy Fountains page.

Two of these catch people out. The Hookshot is not in a dungeon, and the Forest Temple cannot be reached without it. And the Fire Arrows only appear if you shoot the sun at Lake Hylia; nothing in the story sends you there.

Where are the capacity upgrades?

Each pair of upgrades can be done in either order. The first one you finish gives the middle size and the second gives the largest.

First-person slingshot view aimed at a round target hanging from a branch in the Lost Woods, with the score 100 on screen
3DS version: the hanging target in the Lost Woods. Three hits in the centre, each showing 100, earn a bigger Bullet Bag.

A few notes on the fiddly ones:

  • Horseback Archery. You need Gerudo’s Membership Card, Epona and the Fairy Bow, and the range is open in the daytime. A score of 1,000 gives a Piece of Heart; 1,500 gives the quiver.
  • Bombchu Bowling. The prize changes from game to game, and the Bomb Bag and a Piece of Heart are both in the rotation. Keep playing until each comes up.
  • The masks. The Skull Mask and the Mask of Truth both come from the Happy Mask Shop in Castle Town, which only child Link can use. The mask guide covers the whole chain.
  • The wallets. You cannot hold more than 99 Rupees until you have 10 tokens. The Gold Skulltulas checklist has an easy first 10.
First-person bow view from horseback aimed at round targets at the Horseback Archery Range, with point values 30, 60 and 100 on the rings
3DS version: the Horseback Archery Range. The rings score 30, 60 and 100.

Which upgrades are worth getting early?

  • Adult’s Wallet. Ten tokens is quick, and several things cost more than 99 Rupees: the tenth Magic Bean, both tunics in the shops and the Giant’s Knife.
  • Bigger Bullet Bag from the Lost Woods. It is free, takes a minute, and is available as soon as you have the slingshot.
  • Magic meter. Climb to the Great Fairy on Death Mountain right after Dodongo’s Cavern. Without it you cannot use Din’s Fire, the Lens of Truth or any magic arrow.
  • Golden Scale. It reaches a Piece of Heart in the lakeside laboratory and another in a Hyrule Field grotto.

What changes for items in the Switch 2 remake?

Nintendo has announced two changes that touch items. You can swap weapons and items on the fly instead of going through the pause menu, and the slingshot, bow and similar tools can be aimed with motion controls. Nintendo has not said that any item or upgrade has moved. The list of announcements is in every confirmed new feature.

FAQ

Where do you get the Biggest Quiver in Ocarina of Time?
There are two quiver upgrades and you can do them in either order: hit all 10 targets at the Kakariko Shooting Gallery as an adult, and score 1,500 points at the Horseback Archery Range in Gerudo's Fortress. The first gives 40 arrows, the second 50.
How do you get a bigger wallet?
Collect Gold Skulltula tokens and visit the House of Skulltula in Kakariko Village. Ten tokens give the Adult's Wallet, which holds 200 Rupees, and 30 tokens give the Giant's Wallet, which holds 500.
How heavy a fish do you need for the Golden Scale?
As an adult, catch a fish of 13 pounds or more at the Fishing Pond in Lake Hylia and show it to the owner. As a child the same pond gives a Piece of Heart for a 10-pound fish.
Can you buy the Goron Tunic and Zora Tunic?
Yes, but both are free first. A young Goron gives adult Link the Goron Tunic in Goron City, and King Zora gives the Zora Tunic once you thaw him with Blue Fire. The shops sell them for 200 and 300 Rupees.
Which items can only one age use?
Child Link alone uses the Fairy Slingshot, Boomerang, Deku Sticks and Kokiri Sword. Adult Link alone uses the Fairy Bow, Hookshot, Megaton Hammer, the gauntlets, the tunics and the Iron and Hover Boots.
