Ocarina of Time Masks: Happy Mask Shop and Mask of Truth

The Happy Mask Shop does not sell masks. It lends them to child Link one at a time, you find the one person who wants each mask, and you bring the shop its price back. Four sales in a row unlock the Mask of Truth and three more masks to borrow freely.

Who buys each mask, and for how much?

Put the mask on before you talk to the buyer. After each sale, go back to the shop, pay what you owe, and the next mask becomes available.

How do you open the Happy Mask Shop?

1. Get Zelda’s Letter. Zelda gives it to you in the castle courtyard.
2. Show it to the gate guard in Kakariko Village. He opens the gate to Death Mountain Trail and mentions that his son wants a popular mask.
3. Go to the Market in the daytime. The shop is now open, and the Keaton Mask is the first one on offer.

The shop only exists in the child era. As an adult the Market is in ruins, so finish the chain as a child, or return to the Temple of Time and put the Master Sword back.

How do you sell the four masks?

1. Keaton Mask to the gate guard. The same guard who read Zelda’s Letter buys it for his son and pays 15 Rupees for a 10-Rupee mask.
2. Skull Mask to the Skull Kid. Enter the Lost Woods from Kokiri Forest and take the first left. He stands on a stump. Play Saria’s Song for him first to make friends, which also earns a Piece of Heart. He pays 10 Rupees for a 20-Rupee mask, so bring the difference.
3. Spooky Mask to the graveyard boy. He walks around Kakariko Graveyard during the day pretending to be the gravekeeper. He pays the full 30 Rupees.
4. Bunny Hood to the Running Man. He jogs around Hyrule Field once you have all three Spiritual Stones. Wait for him to stop for a rest, which he does at night, and talk to him wearing the hood. He fills your wallet to its limit.

What does each mask do?

You carry one mask at a time, and you can borrow a mask again after selling it. None of them is needed to finish the story.

What is the Forest Stage?

The Forest Stage is a hidden hole in the Lost Woods where a crowd of Deku Scrubs judges your mask. From the Lost Woods entrance go right, left, right, left, left to a clearing with a lone tree. Butterflies hover over a patch of grass to the left of the tree; walk around under them until you drop in.

• Skull Mask: the scrubs love it and raise your Deku Stick capacity to 30.
• Mask of Truth: they dislike it but raise your Deku Nut capacity to 30 anyway.
