Ocarina of Time Great Fairy Fountains: All 6 Locations
All six Great Fairy Fountains in Ocarina of Time: where each one is, what opens it, and which gives magic, Din's Fire, double magic and double defense.
There are six Great Fairy Fountains in Ocarina of Time. Each is sealed behind a rock or a wall, and each works the same way inside: stand on the Triforce mark in front of the pool and play Zelda’s Lullaby. Together they give you magic, three spells, a doubled magic meter and doubled defense.
Where is each Great Fairy Fountain, and what does it give?
| # | Location | Age | What opens it | Reward |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Death Mountain summit, left of the owl | Child or adult | Bomb the wall | Magic meter and the magic spin attack |
| 2 | Hyrule Castle grounds, the dead-end path | Child | Bomb the boulder, crawl through | Din’s Fire |
| 3 | Zora’s Fountain, the small island behind Jabu-Jabu | Child or adult | Bomb the wall | Farore’s Wind |
| 4 | Death Mountain Crater, across the bridge | Adult | Megaton Hammer on the boulders | Double magic meter |
| 5 | Desert Colossus, between two palm trees | Child or adult | Bomb the cracked wall | Nayru’s Love |
| 6 | Outside Ganon’s Castle, the dead end | Adult | Golden Gauntlets to lift the pillar | Double defense |
All six need Zelda’s Lullaby, and the three spells need the magic meter from fountain 1 before you can cast them.
How do you reach the three child fountains?
1. Death Mountain summit: magic. You need Bombs, so go after Dodongo’s Cavern. From the flag near the Goron City entrance, take the path uphill and bomb the boulders in the way. Further on, rocks rain down from the volcano; crouch under the Hylian Shield until they stop. Shoot the Skulltulas off the climbing wall and go up. At the top an owl sits by a sign, and the wall to its left breaks with a Bomb. The owl will fly you down afterwards.
2. Hyrule Castle: Din’s Fire. Enter the castle grounds, climb the vines and get past the gate. Follow the road to where it branches; the right-hand path ends at a sign reading “Dead End” and a boulder. Bomb the boulder and crawl through the hole behind it.
3. Zora’s Fountain: Farore’s Wind. Go past King Zora to the water where Jabu-Jabu floats. Swim to the small island with a tree in the corner of the fountain and set a Bomb by the boulder against its back wall.
How do you reach the three adult fountains?
4. Death Mountain Crater: double magic. You need the Megaton Hammer from the Fire Temple. Enter the crater through Darunia’s room in Goron City, or warp in with the Bolero of Fire and cross back over the broken bridge with the Hookshot. Two boulders block a cave in the crater wall; Bombs do nothing to them, but the hammer breaks both.
5. Desert Colossus: Nayru’s Love. Cross the Haunted Wasteland to the Colossus. As you come in, look along the wall to the right for two palm trees close together. The cracked wall between them breaks with a Bomb. You can also do this as a child after learning the Requiem of Spirit.
6. Outside Ganon’s Castle: double defense. Clear the Shadow Barrier inside Ganon’s Castle to get the Golden Gauntlets, then leave the castle. Follow the path outside to a dead end with a huge dark pillar and lift it.
What does each power do?
| Power | What it does | Where it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Magic meter and magic spin attack | Adds the green meter. Hold the sword button to charge a wider spin attack that uses magic | Needed for every spell, the Lens of Truth and the magic arrows |
| Din’s Fire | A dome of fire spreads out from Link | Opens the Shadow Temple; lights several torches at once |
| Farore’s Wind | Sets a warp point inside a dungeon and returns you to it later | Saves walking in the long temples |
| Nayru’s Love | A barrier that stops damage for a short time | Tough rooms and bosses |
| Double magic | The meter becomes twice as long | Lens of Truth and magic arrows last twice as long |
| Double defense | Hearts gain a white border and every hit does half damage | The fights against Ganondorf and Ganon |
In what order should you visit them?
- Summit and Hyrule Castle right after Dodongo’s Cavern. Both only need Bombs, and you get magic and Din’s Fire before the third dungeon.
- Zora’s Fountain while you are there for Jabu-Jabu. It is a short swim from where you enter Jabu-Jabu’s Belly.
- The crater after the Fire Temple. A doubled meter helps in every temple that follows.
- The Colossus when you first cross the desert, before the Spirit Temple.
- Ganon’s Castle last, on your way back in to face Ganondorf.
