Ocarina of Time Fire Temple Walkthrough: Gorons, Megaton Hammer, Volvagia

The Fire Temple is the second adult dungeon. Ganondorf has locked the Gorons inside to feed them to the dragon Volvagia, and every Small Key comes from one of their cells. For its place in the full route, see the Ocarina of Time walkthrough; the previous dungeon is the Forest Temple.

Only rooms with large lava pools and the boss arena are deadly without the Goron Tunic, but wear it anyway. Bring plenty of Bombs: walls that ring hollow when slashed can be blown open, and fake doors stick out from the wall.

How do you get into the Fire Temple?

  1. Stop Darunia’s son with a Bomb. Goron City is empty except for one rolling Goron. A Bomb stops him; he gives you the Goron Tunic and opens his father’s room.
  2. Move the statue in Darunia’s room. The passage behind it leads into Death Mountain Crater.
  3. Hookshot across the broken bridge. Aim at the wooden post above the intact section. Sheik appears on the bridge and teaches the Bolero of Fire.
  4. Climb down the ladder to the entrance. Dropping instead costs health.

How do you get Small Keys 1 to 3?

  1. Find Darunia behind the left door. Climb the entrance stairs and go through the unlocked door on the left.
  2. Free the first Goron for Key 1. Jump across the three platforms on the left, step on the switch and open the chest. This Goron tells you the pillar in this room’s ceiling is the way forward.
  3. Unlock the door into the lava cavern. Return to the entrance room and use the locked door.
  4. Take the left-side door for Key 2. Follow the wall left to the door under a ledge with a blue Time Block above it.
  5. Optional: Gold Skulltula #58. From that ledge, play the Song of Time to bring the Time Block down, then climb into the room above. Shield against the Flying Tiles, shoot the Like Like and take the token from the wall.
  6. Bomb the hollow wall for Key 3. Keep circling the cavern’s edge past a locked door to a ledge whose wall sounds hollow when slashed. Bomb it and free the Goron inside.
  7. Go through the locked door you passed. It leads to the flame-vent room.

How do you reach the boulder maze?

  1. Ride the block up the fire vent. Climb or Hookshot the metal fence, clear the Keese, and push the block on the right into the column of fire. Jump on it to ride up to the next floor and use the locked door there.
  2. Climb the Torch Slug room. A caged Goron is visible but out of reach for now. Kill the Torch Slugs on the left ledges; each takes two hits.
  3. Push and pull the block. Push the block by the crystal switch off its ledge, drop down, pull it as far as it goes and use it to reach the fence.
  4. Bomb the crystal switch and climb. Fire guards the top of the fence. Drop a Bomb on the switch or Hookshot it, then climb before the flames return.

Where are Keys 4 and 5 in the boulder maze?

  1. Bomb the alcove wall for Gold Skulltula #59. Turn left and follow the outer wall, dodging the rolling boulders, to an alcove under a slanted overhang. The wall there rings hollow; bomb it.
  2. Take the alcove door for Key 4. Continue along the outer wall to an alcove with a door, free the Goron and take the key.
  3. Press the far switch for Key 5. On the opposite side of the maze, a floor switch in a niche opens another cell.
  4. Leave by the locked door. It sits on the outer wall near the fourth Goron’s room.

Where are the Dungeon Map and the wall of fire?

  1. Shoot the eye switch for the Dungeon Map. On the narrow walkway, an arrow opens the barred door on the right. Falling from here drops you back into the lava cavern.
  2. Outrun the wall of fire. Take the locked door, cross the beam and jump onto the grating. Flames chase you, Red Bubbles pop out of the lava, and the pillars with hearts halfway along are a safe stop.
  3. Enter the upper boulder maze. The door at the end brings you out on top of the maze walls.
  1. Summon Pierre by the entrance. Play the Scarecrow’s Song just inside the upper maze, Hookshot Pierre on the platform, then Hookshot the target on the platform opposite. It rises to the top floor.
  2. Climb for Gold Skulltula #60. Go round the corner and up the fence; the token is on it. Climb higher and go through the door.
  3. Hookshot Gold Skulltula #61. In the room with the big pit, it hangs on the wall near the edge.
  4. Race for the Huge Rupee. Step on the switch, Hookshot the target post and reach the chest before time runs out for 200 rupees. Go back to the boulder room and wait for the elevator.

How do you get Keys 6 and 7?

  1. Bomb the cracked floor for Key 6. Kill the Torch Slug on the platform ahead of the upper entrance and bomb the crack. Climb down to the caged Goron you saw in the Torch Slug room, then climb back.
  2. Hit the ledge switch for Key 7. Jump to the small platform with a switch, avoiding jumps while boulders pass beneath. Cross the narrow platforms to the opened cell.

How do you get through the invisible fire maze?

  1. Take the locked door in the wall-of-fire room. Return along the grating to the locked door partway along; the flames chase you again. In the maze beyond, fire walls appear between posts as you get close.
  2. Get the Compass on the right. Follow the right side to a door; the chest inside holds the Compass.
  3. Use the maze’s locked door. Work round to the locked door on the south side of the centre. The small room beyond has a Goron you cannot reach yet; go straight through.
  4. Plan a route, then hit the switch. The switch on this side briefly clears the flames blocking the exit. Scout a path first, then run. Bomb the door at the end, which is fake, to reveal the real one.

How do you beat the Flare Dancer?

  1. Knock the core out and chase it. While it spins, throw a Bomb or fire the Hookshot to strip its flaming body. The black core sprints around the room; get in its path and slash. It changes colour as it weakens, ending in green, and its platform lifts you to the next floor when it dies.

Where is the Megaton Hammer?

  1. Bomb the next crystal switch. Climb the fence in the hallway and drop a Bomb or Hookshot the switch below to clear the fire above you.
  2. Clear the Keese and race to the chest. In the ring-shaped room, shoot the three Fire Keese first. The switch gives you only a few seconds to run the narrow path up to the big chest, which holds the Megaton Hammer. A fall sends you down several floors, so set Farore’s Wind first.

How do you get Key 8 and drop the pillar?

  1. Hammer the face block by the door. It falls away and opens a hole. Drop through and hammer the statue blocking the door.
  2. Turn the floor into stairs. Kill the Fire Keese and hammer the face block at the pool’s edge. Carry a crate down the new stairs and set it on the blue switch to open the door.
  3. Ride the next face block down. Stand on it and hammer it to sink into the fire maze, then hammer the rusted switch to open the barred door.
  4. Free the eighth Goron for Key 8. Play the Song of Time to bring the Time Block across the gap, hammer the rusted switch on the far side and take the key from the cell.
  5. Hammer the pillar. Back in the fire maze, stand on the big face block on the central structure and hammer it. It drops into Darunia’s room and becomes the path to the boss door.

Where is the Boss Key?

  1. Break the entrance statue. Hammer the statue to the right of the entrance stairs and use the locked door behind it.
  2. Clear the enemy room. Kill every Fire Keese and Torch Slug to open the next door; the Hammer flips the slugs.
  3. Take Gold Skulltula #62. Shield against the tiles, kill the Like Like and take the token from the wall.
  4. Beat the second Flare Dancer. A ground pound next to it knocks the core out. The chest that appears holds Bombs.
  5. Hammer the rusted switch for the Boss Key. The last Goron’s cell holds the Boss Key chest.
  6. Cross the pillar to the boss door. In Darunia’s room, jump onto the pillar and then to the boss door. Two Fairies sit in jars on the platform to the far right if you need bottles filled.

How do you beat Volvagia?

  • Surface phase: a small burst of fire marks the hole, out of nine, it will use. Run over, hammer its head, then slash or hammer while it is stunned.
  • Flying phase: it circles and breathes fire. Hang off the edge of the platform to avoid it, or shoot arrows to damage it.
  • Rock phase: it flies to the ceiling and brings down rocks. Run from the shadows or hang off the edge.
  • Late fight: it fakes by sending fire out of several holes first. Stay near the edge where you can see every hole.

If you fall into the lava, climb back up. Take the Heart Container before stepping into the blue light.

FAQ

What do I need before the Fire Temple?
Get the Goron Tunic from Darunia’s son in Goron City; the rooms with big lava pools and the boss arena drain your hearts without it. Bring Bombs, the Hookshot and the Fairy Bow, which opens the Dungeon Map room.
How many Small Keys are in the Fire Temple?
There are 8 Small Keys, and each comes from a caged Goron. A ninth Goron, freed after the second Flare Dancer, guards the Boss Key.
How do I beat the Flare Dancer?
While it spins, hit it with a Bomb or the Hookshot to knock the black core out of its flaming body. Cut the core off as it runs around the room and slash it. With the Megaton Hammer, a ground pound next to it does the same job.
How do I beat Volvagia?
Watch for the burst of fire that shows which of the nine holes it will surface from, then hit its head with the Megaton Hammer and slash while it is stunned. Run from the shadows when rocks fall, and hang off the platform edge when it flies around breathing fire.
