TotK Phantom Ganon: Where It Appears and How to Beat It
Every place Phantom Ganon appears in Tears of the Kingdom, its HP and weak points from the game data, its attacks and how to dodge them, and what it drops.
Phantom Ganon is the sword-wielding Gloom monster that keeps turning up in Tears of the Kingdom: in Hyrule Castle, beneath the Great Deku Tree, after every Gloom Spawn fight, and in the last battle. This page gathers every place you meet it, its numbers from the game data, and how to beat it. The final battle itself is on the Ganondorf page.
What is Phantom Ganon?
At first the Compendium knows little: “It was first sighted after the Upheaval. Its identity and origins are shrouded in mystery.” Later in the story the entry changes to “A monster created from the very flesh and blood of Demon King Ganondorf that will follow his bidding without hesitation.”
| HP | 450 |
| Head | Double damage |
| Beam Emitters | 20% damage (80% less) |
| Lightning strike | 120 damage |
| Drops | Dark Clump |
The numbers are from its parameter file, the same 450 as in the enemy overview.
Where do you fight Phantom Ganon?
| Where | How many | When |
|---|---|---|
| Hyrule Castle | 5 at once, with the sages | Main quest Crisis at Hyrule Castle |
| Depths below Korok Forest | 1 | At the Great Deku Tree, after Gloom Spawn |
| Wherever you beat Gloom Spawn | 1 | Appears when the last hand falls |
| Gloom’s Origin | Several | Final battle, beside Demon King Ganondorf |
In Hyrule Castle the boss bar calls it “The Demon King’s Phantom Saboteur”. Let the sages draw some of them off and take them one at a time.
The Great Deku Tree fight is on the way to the Master Sword. The Master Sword lights up near Gloom-steeped enemies and is at its strongest against Phantom Ganon.
The game data also has a second group of five deep beneath Hyrule Castle, next to the battle with the Demon King’s Army. When that group is used is not confirmed here.
How do you beat Phantom Ganon?
- Dodge and Flurry Rush. It is fast and hits hard, but every big swing gives you an opening. Dodge just before it lands and counter with a Flurry Rush, using your strongest weapon.
- Know which way to dodge. Backflip away from the horizontal sweep and from the charged spin. Jump sideways from the overhead strike: a backflip does not get you out of that one.
- Stay out of its Gloom. Gloom pools around it and damages your hearts if you stand in it. Hit it a few times and step out again; the pool is said to shrink once it takes enough damage.
- Aim for the head if you use a bow: head hits do double damage. From a distance it is said to shoot at you with a bow, and a headshot interrupts it.
Depending on the fight it is said to carry the Gloom Sword, the Gloom Club or the Gloom Spear. Below half health it draws a second sword and switches to longer spin and slash combos.
What does Phantom Ganon drop?
Dark Clumps. It is also said to leave behind the Gloom Sword and the Demon King’s Bow it was carrying.
