Where should you farm Fire-Breath and Ice-Breath Lizalfos tails?

Start in Gerudo Canyon, where some groups change between Fire-Breath Lizalfos in the daytime and Ice-Breath Lizalfos at night. Photograph both variants and unlock Sensor+ before making repeated runs. Bring ice attacks for the fire variant, fire attacks for the ice variant, and protection suited to the current temperature.

This page focuses on the two elemental tails. A plain Lizalfos Tail, Blue Lizalfos Tail and Fire-Breath Lizalfos Tail are different inventory items; one cannot replace another at a Great Fairy. Check the exact material name on the armor upgrade list first.

What is the actual tail drop rate?

The normal Fire-Breath and Ice-Breath Lizalfos drop tables each give the tail a 25% chance. The horn and talons have separate rolls, so getting a horn without a tail is normal. Cutting a visible tail or choosing a particular sword is not a required step in those drop tables.

Planning targetAverage kills at a 25% drop rateWhat that number means
3 tails12An average across many attempts, not a guarantee for one group
10 tails40Some runs take fewer kills; others take more
39 fire tails for the full Snowquill set156Three pieces each need 3 at three stars and 10 at four stars

Even four independent 25% rolls still have about a 31.6% chance of dropping no tail. Plan around several groups, and stop once your actual inventory meets the requirement. Opposite-element attacks save time and durability; they do not turn a 25% roll into a guaranteed tail.

How do you run the Gerudo Canyon route?

Use Gerudo Canyon Skyview Tower as your regional access point. Pin the stops below before launching, then choose a landing near the eastern canyon groups. These are approximate map coordinates (C is inside a cave, the rest are on the surface), not a straight road: ledges and cliffs can require climbing or another glide.

StopMap coordinates, X / YHow to use it
A: eastern canyon group-1535 / -2220Sweep the nearby cluster before moving west
B: canyon pass group-1720 / -2180Check both sides of the ledge around the marked pair
C: cave south of the pass-1740 / -2390This one is inside Lower Spectacle Rock Cave: find the cave mouth first, then use the sensor to pin it down
D: Spectacle Rock side-2204 / -2384Check the western group; the recorded placement here includes the canyon ice variant

The map below shows the recorded canyon-variant placements, including nearby alternatives. The marker’s variant is a placement label, not a live clock check: confirm the monster in front of you and switch the sensor to the type you need. Several markers can be close together; zoom in before marking a group finished.

  1. Run the canyon in daylight for fire tails, or at night for ice tails. The changeover is around 7:00 and 19:00; avoid starting exactly at the boundary if you only want one type.
  2. Photograph and identify the target before attacking. Hit a Fire-Breath Lizalfos with ice, or an Ice-Breath Lizalfos with fire, for an immediate elemental kill.
  3. Pick up the drops before moving on. Count the tail item itself, not the number of defeated enemies.
  4. Move to the next group. Reportedly, after clearing the fire variants by day you can wait at a fire until night and find the ice variants at the same spots, so each type can be farmed once per cycle. Once both are cleared, change region or do other tasks until monsters return after a Blood Moon. Resting at a fire changes the clock; it does not respawn enemies you already killed.

What if the canyon is empty or you need another tail type?

If the wrong element appears, check the time and sensor target. If no enemy appears, check whether you already cleared the group at that time of day since the last Blood Moon. If the signal sounds close but nothing is visible, inspect the cliff above or below you instead of running circles at the same elevation.

For an alternative fire run, use the surface markers around Death Mountain and the Bridge of Eldin. For ice tails, check Hebra and the Gerudo Highlands. The complete Lizalfos map lets you filter those variants separately. Wear the appropriate cold or flame protection for the actual area; desert heat protection and flame protection are different effects.

Electric Lizalfos tails require the yellow electric variant, chiefly in the Gerudo region. Fire and ice do not provide the same opposite-element instant kill against it. Keep your distance from water and metal weapons when it charges, and use the separate electric filter on the full map.

Electric tails belong to a separate variant; the fire-and-ice canyon loop does not substitute for them.

Which upgrades should you reserve fire tails for?

The Snowquill set needs 39 fire tails across all three pieces for the three- and four-star upgrades combined. The Yiga set needs another 9 fire tails for all three two-star upgrades. Together that is 48, assuming none of those upgrades are already complete. Other materials and rupees are still required.

Keep those upgrade tails before selling, cooking or fusing extras. If you only want one upgraded piece, calculate that piece’s remaining stages instead of farming a full set’s total.
