TotK Star Fragment Farming: Night Routes and Armor Totals
Farm Star Fragments in Tears of the Kingdom with a night skydiving loop, fixed chests, and a breakdown of the 103 fragments needed for armor upgrades.
Where should you farm, and what do you need?
For repeatable Star Fragment hunting in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, try catching them during night dives. Launch from a tower or jump from a sky island, watch for a glowing trail nearby, then move close enough to collect the fragment in midair. This can save a long chase across the surface.
- Unlock Gerudo Canyon Skyview Tower and the travel point at Mayam Shrine for alternating starts.
- Obtain the Paraglider and bring stamina recovery food. Carry cold protection for chilly nights and high altitudes. Save stamina for steering and landing.
- Bring Wood and something to light it, or use an existing fire. Clear nearby enemies before resting.
- The Glide set helps with air movement but is optional. Unless you have fall-damage protection, open the Paraglider before landing.
When do falling stars appear, and when do they disappear?
Plan your search for nighttime, before dawn. Resting at a fire until night sets the clock to 9 PM, a convenient starting point. Fallen fragments disappear at 5 AM, so have them in your inventory before then. This schedule does not guarantee a spawn throughout that entire window.
A star may appear beside Link while he is falling. You can also spot distant falling stars and their landing beacons from a viewpoint on the surface. Choose a clear view with land below so you can follow the trail and land safely. There is no need to spend your route waiting for a particular moon phase, Blood Moon or compass direction.
When a distant beacon appears, mark its landing area with the scope before descending. Open the Paraglider to slow down near the ground, and approach promptly on slopes. Be careful at cliff edges: a run is complete only when the item reaches your inventory.
How does the tower and sky-island loop work?
Treat this as a repeatable attempt, with no promised fragments per minute or guaranteed drop on each dive.
| Turn | Starting point | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| A | Gerudo Canyon Skyview Tower | Rest until night, launch, then free-fall while watching for a bright trail near Link |
| B | The island with Mayam Shrine | After collecting, rest until night again, travel to the shrine and jump from the edge toward open ground below |
| Next turn | Return to A | Advance to night again and repeat; change the start or night if nothing appears |
- Set the time first. Repeated daytime launches do not replace resting until night.
- Fall, then adjust. When a fragment appears, move toward it. Open the Paraglider to slow down or close it to descend faster as needed.
- Use the pickup prompt immediately. If you miss the midair catch, follow the landing point.
- Check your inventory before restarting. Seeing a star or passing its beacon is not the same as collecting it.
After several empty attempts, check the clock, whether you actually advanced to a fresh night, and whether you keep jumping from the same start. You can rest until morning and then night before switching sites. This route does not require reloading saves or meeting an unverified exact height or waiting time.
Which fixed sources are worth collecting?
Unopened chests can fill a small shortfall, but they are not an endlessly refreshing farm. Collect them on your first visit, then use night hunting for the remainder.
| Source | Where to look | Reward |
|---|---|---|
| Ga-ahisas Shrine | Finish the mirror route on Lightcast Island, enter the shrine and open its blessing chest | 1 Star Fragment, once |
| A separate chest inside Lightcast Island | Search the island’s interior mirror route near map coordinates -3633, 1050; this is outside the shrine | 1 Star Fragment, once |
If neither chest has been opened, the visit supplies 2 fragments. The second coordinate is a horizontal search point, not a chest on the island’s roof. Follow the shrine walkthrough through the interior. Quest rewards and monster drops are not included as reliable farming sources here; plan around the confirmed chests and night route.
Which armor uses Star Fragments, and how many should you reserve?
This table counts Star Fragments only, upgrading one copy of each piece from no stars to four stars. Other materials and rupees are additional. The four numbers show the cost of gaining the first, second, third and fourth star. A set contains its head, body and leg pieces.
| Target | Fragments per piece, by stage | Group total |
|---|---|---|
| Hero set, three pieces | 1+1+1+1 | 12 |
| Awakening set, three pieces | 1+1+1+1 | 12 |
| Time set, three pieces | 1+1+1+1 | 12 |
| Wind set, three pieces | 1+1+1+1 | 12 |
| Twilight set, three pieces | 1+1+1+1 | 12 |
| Sky set, three pieces | 1+1+1+1 | 12 |
| Wild set, three pieces | 0+0+0+3 | 9 |
| Diamond Circlet | 0+0+1+2 | 3 |
| Ruby Circlet | 0+0+1+2 | 3 |
| Sapphire Circlet | 0+0+1+2 | 3 |
| Topaz Earrings | 0+0+1+2 | 3 |
| Sheik’s Mask | 1+2+3+4 | 10 |
| Total | 6×12+9+4×3+10 | 103 |
Choose a budget that matches what you will actually wear:
- One of the first six hero sets: 12 fragments. If all three pieces already have two stars, only two stages remain: 2 per piece, or 6 total.
- The Wild set: 9 fragments. Its fragments are required only at four stars; do not apply the other sets’ 12-fragment formula.
- Sheik’s Mask: 10 fragments. If it already has three stars, the final stage needs 4.
- Every piece in the table: 103 minus what you have already spent. Upgrading duplicate copies is extra.
See the hero armor guide and all armor for locations and other requirements. Everyday sets have their own upgrade materials table.
Should spare fragments go into cooking or be sold?
Finish your upgrade budget before spending them elsewhere. A fragment can be fused to a weapon; magic weapons can produce light orbs for illumination. It is not a Hearty ingredient and cannot replace truffles or radishes.
In cooking, a fragment acts as a seasoning that triggers Critical Success in a valid dish. A Hearty meal does not need one for full recovery, so this guide adds no cooking reserve to the armor budget. A fragment sells for 200 rupees; set aside upgrade materials before selling.
For recovery supplies, use the Hearty ingredient routes. For upgrade fees, see rupee farming before selling the rare item your next armor stage needs.
