Malanya, the Horse God, revives horses and, new in Tears of the Kingdom, upgrades them — for food. This page gives every meal he takes for each star of each trait, how to cook those meals, and how to get him started.

Where is the Horse God?

Malanya has moved his spring from the Lake of the Horse God in Faron to Bloodleaf Lake in Akkala (Zelda Dungeon). The game hints at it too: sleep in a Malanya bed at a stable and he may tell you, “In northeast Hyrule…near a stable in Akkala… I am waiting…”. A Malanya bed costs 7 Pony Points to unlock.

He is asleep in a bud at first. By his own words, it was an Endura Carrot that gave him “the energy to emerge from my bud”. After that:

  • Revive a horse that has died: bring a Roasted Endura Carrot (“Come back here with a roasted endura carrot, and I will revive your horse”, he tells you).
  • Enhance a horse: pick a trait and hand over the meals in the table below.

What does each trait do?

In Malanya’s own words when he upgrades it:

TraitWhat it improves
Strength“Your horse’s constitution will now be more robust—its body more resilient.”
Speed“Your horse will now be able to run farther and faster than ever before.”
Stamina“Your horse should now be able to dash more often without tiring out.”
Pull“Your horse will now be able to drag heavier objects.”

Each trait goes up to five stars, and he raises one star at a time (Game8).

Which meals does each upgrade take?

Trait ★★ ★★★ ★★★★ ★★★★★
Strength Fried Wild Greens ×1Copious Fried Wild Greens ×1Veggie Rice Balls ×3, Copious Fried Wild Greens ×3Vegetable Curry ×3, Hot Buttered Apple ×3, Carrot Cake ×3
Speed Fried Wild Greens ×1Salt-Grilled Greens ×1Glazed Veggies ×3, Steamed Tomatoes ×3Vegetable Omelet ×3, Veggie Cream Soup ×3, Apple Pie ×3
Stamina Fried Wild Greens ×1Herb Sauté ×1Honeyed Apple ×3, Veggie Porridge ×3Vegetable Risotto ×3, Carrot Stew ×3, Cream of Vegetable Soup ×3
Pull Fried Wild Greens ×1Veggie Rice Balls ×1Copious Fried Wild Greens ×3, Veggie Porridge ×3Hot Buttered Apple ×3, Carrot Stew ×3, Veggie Cream Soup ×3

The table is Zelda Dungeon’s, checked against Game8’s: they agree on every cell from ★★★ up. For ★★ Zelda Dungeon lists Fried Wild Greens for all four traits, while Game8’s table shows it under Strength only. The game backs the dish list: in the Malanya-bed messages he says he hungers for Copious Fried Wild Greens, Vegetable Curry, Hot Buttered Apple, Carrot Cake, Veggie Cream Soup, Carrot Stew, Cream of Vegetable Soup, Glazed Veggies, Steamed Tomatoes, Vegetable Omelet, Apple Pie, Herb Sauté and Vegetable Risotto — each with the ingredients it takes.

How do you cook the meals?

The 18 dishes in the table, with every recipe from the game’s cooking data. “Any plant or vegetable” means any ingredient of that kind.

Taking a horse from one star to five in all four traits takes the four ★★ Fried Wild Greens, four ★★★ meals, 24 meals for ★★★★ and 36 for ★★★★★ — fewer if it starts with more stars. Tabantha Wheat, Goat Butter, Fresh Milk, Hylian Rice, Rock Salt and Cane Sugar turn up again and again, so stock them before the last two stars.

FAQ

Where is the Horse God in Tears of the Kingdom?
At Bloodleaf Lake in Akkala (Zelda Dungeon); the game's own hint says he waits in northeast Hyrule, near a stable in Akkala. He has moved from his old spring by the Lake of the Horse God in Faron.
What does the Horse God want to upgrade a horse?
Vegetable meals. The second star of any trait is one Fried Wild Greens; the fifth star takes three each of three dishes, for example Vegetable Curry, Hot Buttered Apple and Carrot Cake for Strength. The full table is on this page.
Can you upgrade the Giant Horse?
No. Malanya says the horse does not want its abilities enhanced; Zelda Dungeon notes the same for the Giant Horse and the Giant White Stallion.
