Horriblins are new in Tears of the Kingdom. The game says they began appearing in Hyrule’s caves after the Upheaval, with horns “perfect for crushing rocks” and limbs strong enough to walk along walls and ceilings “as easily as if they were walking on the ground”. This page covers all four colors, red, blue, black and silver: their HP and drops from the game’s own data, how to recognize each rank, how to get them off the ceiling and beat them fast, and a map of all 214 Horriblins the game places. For the other monster families see the enemy overview; for cave locations see caves in Tears of the Kingdom.

How do you tell the Horriblin ranks apart?

RankHPHow to recognize it
Horriblin (red)35Pale gray body, orange-red mane, a hammer-shaped horn
Blue Horriblin106Blue body and mane, a hammer-shaped horn with spiky bumps
Black Horriblin280Near-black body, yellow mane, a large heavy hammer-shaped horn
Silver Horriblin840White body with purple markings and hair, a curved horn

The HP comes from the game’s parameter files. The horn shapes are from the game’s own item descriptions: the red Horriblin’s horn is “elongated hammer-shaped” with a hard, flat front, the blue one has “spiky bumps”, the black one has “slowly grown into its present hammer-like shape”, and the silver one is “a curved horn with an extremely hard tip”. The silver markings come from the Hyrule Compendium entry.

Which color you meet depends on how far you are. Enemies are replaced by stronger variants as you beat more of them, so a cave that held red Horriblins early on can hold blue or black ones later.

What is a red Horriblin like?

The weakest rank, with 35 HP. The Hyrule Compendium says Horriblins “often hang from ceilings, waiting for prey”, and the item description of the Horriblin Mask mentions their “big nose and smiley mouth”. Expect them in pairs: many caves have two placed close together, and they often carry spears or two-handed swords.

What is a Blue Horriblin like?

A Blue Horriblin knocked down to the cave floor, its weapon dropped beside it.

A Blue Horriblin has 106 HP. The game says that compared to the red variety it has more stamina and more developed limbs, “enabling them to hurl large rocks with ease”, so keep moving when one picks up a boulder. From this rank up, a Horriblin can drop Horriblin Guts.

What is a Black Horriblin like?

With 280 HP the Black Horriblin is eight times as tough as a red one. The game says its time spent on walls and ceilings has given it “great strength in their mighty arms”, and that it “poses a huge threat to even the most experienced adventurers”. Ten of the eleven Horriblins placed in Hyrule Castle are black ones, in the Sanctum and the Observation Room.

What is a Silver Horriblin like?

The strongest Horriblin, with 840 HP. The game calls it “the mightiest of the cave masters” and says the purple markings come from “the overwhelming magic power of the Demon King”, which made its body and horn tougher than those of the other ranks. Every Silver Horriblin drops Horriblin Guts and its horn.

How do you beat Horriblins fast?

  • Knock them off the ceiling. The game’s monster tip: “They like to creep along the ceiling, so drop them to the ground before moving in.” Shoot one while it hangs and it falls to the ground, where you can fight it like any other monster instead of dodging attacks from above.
  • Aim for the head. The damage files give every Horriblin a head hitbox that takes double damage.
  • Light the cave first. Throw a Brightbloom Seed or shoot one with a bow so you can see Horriblins on the ceiling before they drop on you.
  • Use fire, ice and shock. The damage files set burn damage for every rank, being frozen deals 10 damage on the spot, and a shock deals 20 and makes a Horriblin drop its weapon.
  • Lightning finishes it. The damage files set lightning damage to 999,999 for every Horriblin rank. Horriblins live mostly underground, so this only helps with the four on the surface.

What do Horriblins drop and what are the parts for?

MonsterAlwaysChance
HorriblinHorriblin HornHorriblin Claw 30%
Blue HorriblinBlue Horriblin HornHorriblin Claw 80% (up to 2 rolls); Horriblin Guts 20%
Black HorriblinBlack Horriblin HornHorriblin Claw 70% (3–4 rolls); Horriblin Guts 60%
Silver HorriblinSilver Horriblin Horn; Horriblin Guts; Horriblin Claw (3–4 rolls)—

Rates are from the game’s drop tables. “Rolls” is how often the game rolls that line. Weapons a Horriblin carries are not part of these tables.

  • Fuse: a horn fused to a weapon adds its attack power. The Black Horriblin Horn adds 22 and the Silver Horriblin Horn 32. Horriblin Claws count double on arrows; the game says a claw on an arrow “increase[s] its attack power”. See the Fuse guide.
  • Elixirs: every horn, claw and gut can be cooked with a critter into an elixir, as each item description says. The guts are “very bitter and unsuitable for cooking” but make “an effective elixir”. See best recipes.
  • Armor upgrades: the Froggy set needs 5 Horriblin Horns per piece at two stars, 5 Blue Horriblin Horns at three stars, and 5 Black Horriblin Horns plus 10 Horriblin Guts at four stars; the Radiant set needs 3 Horriblin Guts per piece at three stars. Details in the Froggy set and the upgrade materials table.
  • Horriblin Mask: not a drop, but Koltin’s tenth reward for Bubbul Gems, once you have handed over 29 in total. See Bubbul Gems.

These are the game’s placement data, each spawn with the color it is placed as; after the rank changes described above, the same spot may hold a stronger color in your game. The 120 cave spawns are spread over at least 48 caves and wells, usually one to four per cave; Deplian Badlands Cave has the most with six. Most cave Horriblins are in Necluda (29) and Hyrule Field (23). In the Depths, most are below Eldin (42). The only four on the surface are two pairs of red Horriblins, by Goronbi River and by Lake Siela.

The map shows all 214. Use the buttons above it to switch between the surface and the Depths, and the filters to show only one rank or region. Cave spawns are shown at the cave’s position on the surface map. Most of the Depths has no place names of its own, so the name given for a Depths spot is the name of the place on the surface directly above it. Find that name on the surface map and the spot is straight below.

FAQ

How much HP do Horriblins have in Tears of the Kingdom?
A red Horriblin has 35 HP, a Blue Horriblin 106, a Black Horriblin 280 and a Silver Horriblin 840. Each rank has two to three times the HP of the one before it.
How do you get a Horriblin off the ceiling?
Hit it while it hangs, for example with an arrow; the game's own tip is to drop them to the ground before moving in. Once it is down, aim for the head: it takes double damage, and a red Horriblin has only 35 HP.
Where can I find Silver Horriblins in Tears of the Kingdom?
The placement data has 6 spawns placed as Silver Horriblins, all in the Depths: 4 below Hebra North Summit and Hebra North Crest, and 2 below Arbiter's Grounds in Gerudo. Other spots also turn silver as stronger variants replace weaker ones.
What does a Silver Horriblin drop?
Always a Silver Horriblin Horn and Horriblin Guts, plus three to four Horriblin Claws. The horn adds 32 attack power when fused, the most of any Horriblin part.
How do you get the Horriblin Mask?
It is not a drop. Koltin gives it as the tenth reward for Bubbul Gems, once you have handed over 29 in total. The game says it makes it hard for Horriblins to notice you.
