The game calls the Chuchu “a low-level, gel-based monster” found all over Hyrule that springs at unsuspecting prey “from the ground or from trees”. There are four kinds, the normal Chuchu and the Fire, Ice and Electric Chuchus, and each comes in three sizes. This page gives their HP and drops from the game’s data, explains how to beat each kind, what every color of jelly is good for, and counts all 479 placed Chuchus by kind and region. The Breath of the Wild Chuchu page covers the earlier game, and the enemy overview the other monster families.

What kinds of Chuchu are there?

ChuchuHP (small)LooksDrops
Chuchu10Blue jelly with big orange eyesChuchu Jelly
Fire Chuchu10Glowing orange, ringed in flamesRed Chuchu Jelly
Ice Chuchu10Pale blue-white, giving off cold mistWhite Chuchu Jelly
Electric Chuchu10Glowing yellow-green, crackling with electricityYellow Chuchu Jelly

The HP is from the game’s parameter files, which list it for the small Chuchus. The game says each Chuchu’s strength “varies by size”, and its data has a separate medium and large version of every kind.

A small blue Chuchu with large orange eyes sitting in a grassy field
A normal Chuchu: blue jelly and two orange eyes. Hits to the eyes do double damage.

What are Fire, Ice and Electric Chuchus?

The three elemental kinds are, in the game’s words, “engulfed in” flames, freezing-cold air or electricity. Each “tends to explode if attacked from close range”, so the game advises spears, arrows and other ranged weapons, and its tip for Chuchus says to throw something at them from a safe distance.

A large and a small Fire Chuchu, both wrapped in flames, on a stone staircase
A big and a small Fire Chuchu on stone steps. Each size is a separate monster in the game’s data.
An Ice Chuchu giving off a cold white mist on a stone ledge in falling snow
An Ice Chuchu wrapped in cold air. Hit it up close and it bursts into a freezing mist.
Two glowing yellow-green Electric Chuchus with electricity arcing above them in a dark place
Two Electric Chuchus, with electricity crackling over their bodies.

What are a Chuchu’s weak points?

  • The eyes. The damage files give every Chuchu two eye hit points that take double damage.
  • Fire against Ice Chuchus. Catching fire deals 9,999 damage to an Ice Chuchu, so a Fire Fruit or Red Chuchu Jelly on an arrow kills it at once. A Fire Chuchu takes no damage from catching fire.
  • Any element against a normal Chuchu. A small normal Chuchu takes 10 damage from catching fire, 10 from being frozen and 20 from a shock, each enough to beat its 10 HP. The element also decides which jelly it drops.
  • Lightning. A lightning strike deals 999,999 damage to the normal, Fire and Ice Chuchu. The Electric Chuchu takes none.

Keep your distance from the elemental kinds: a close-range hit makes one explode right next to Link. Arrows, spears and thrown weapons are the safe choice.

How much jelly does each Chuchu drop?

SizeSure dropExtra jelly
Small1one more at 30% (Electric Chuchu 60%)
Medium2up to 2 more rolls at 60%
Large32 more rolls at 80% (Fire, Ice and Electric: 2–3)

Rates are from the game’s drop tables and are the same for every kind: a Chuchu drops Chuchu Jelly, a Fire Chuchu Red Chuchu Jelly, an Ice Chuchu White Chuchu Jelly and an Electric Chuchu Yellow Chuchu Jelly. A normal Chuchu that was heated up, cooled down or shocked before it died drops the matching color instead.

What is Chuchu Jelly good for?

  • Fuse and throwing. The item descriptions say a struck jelly bursts: Red Chuchu Jelly “in a ball of flame”, White “in a cold mist”, Yellow “in a burst of electric current”. On an arrow that makes a fire, ice or shock arrow. White Chuchu Jelly thrown into water makes an ice panel, as in the Jochisiu Shrine. See the Fuse guide.
  • Plain Chuchu Jelly as water. It splashes like water: it washes the sludge off a Skyview Tower door and cools an Igneo Talus so you can climb it (Stone Taluses). Its item description calls it unstable and says a bit of elemental stimulation changes its form, which is how it turns red, white or yellow.
  • Armor upgrades. The Soldier’s set needs 5 Chuchu Jelly per piece at one star, the Snowquill set 3 Red Chuchu Jelly at one star and 5 at two, the Desert Voe set the same in White, and the Rubber set uses Yellow Chuchu Jelly from the start. See the upgrade materials table.
  • Elixirs and selling. Jellies are monster parts: cooked with a critter they make an elixir whose effect the critter decides (best recipes). A shop pays 2 rupees for Chuchu Jelly and 4 for each colored jelly.

The side quest Photographing a Chuchu, from Sayge in Hateno Village, rewards Chuchu Fabric for the paraglider; see side quests.

Where do Chuchus live?

A spawn counts toward the region of the nearest surface shrine; for the Depths, the shrine above it. The three in Hyrule Castle, a medium Fire, Ice and Electric Chuchu in the Library, are counted under Hyrule Field. With this many spawns a map would be a solid carpet of dots, so the table counts them instead.

  • Fire Chuchus are an Eldin monster: 58 of the 70 are in Eldin, in its caves or in the Depths below it.
  • Ice Chuchus gather in the cold: Hebra and Gerudo, with the Depths below them, hold 83 of the 117.
  • Electric Chuchus are the most common kind, mostly in Gerudo, Necluda and the Depths under Hyrule Field.
  • Normal Chuchus are the ones you meet first, 15 of them on the Great Sky Island.

FAQ

How much HP does a Chuchu have in Tears of the Kingdom?
A small Chuchu, Fire Chuchu, Ice Chuchu or Electric Chuchu has 10 HP in the game's parameter files, and its eyes take double damage, so one hit from most weapons ends it. The game says a Chuchu's strength varies by size, so medium and large ones last longer.
How much jelly does a Chuchu drop?
A small one drops 1 jelly, plus a second at 30% (60% for an Electric Chuchu). A medium one drops 2 plus up to 2 more at 60% each, so 2–4. A large one drops 3 plus 2 more at 80% each (2–3 more for Fire, Ice and Electric), so up to 5 or 6.
How do you get Red, White or Yellow Chuchu Jelly from a normal Chuchu?
Hit it with fire, ice or electricity. The game says the jelly a Chuchu drops depends on whether it was heated up, cooled down or shocked, and plain Chuchu Jelly on the ground changes the same way when an element touches it.
What is Chuchu Jelly used for?
Fused to an arrow or thrown, Red Chuchu Jelly bursts into flame, White into a cold mist and Yellow into an electric current; plain Chuchu Jelly splashes like water. It also upgrades armor: 5 Chuchu Jelly per Soldier's piece at one star, 3 Red for the Snowquill set and 3 White for the Desert Voe set. It sells for 2 rupees, colored jelly for 4.
Where are the most Chuchus in Tears of the Kingdom?
The placement data has 479: 166 Electric, 126 normal, 117 Ice and 70 Fire Chuchus. 58 of the 70 Fire Chuchus are in Eldin, 50 Ice Chuchus are in Hebra (32 of them in the Depths), and 150 Chuchus in all live in the Depths.
