BotW Chuchus: HP by Size, Jelly Drops and Where They Live
Breath of the Wild Chuchus, normal, Fire, Ice and Electric, in three sizes: HP, how much jelly each drops, what the jellies do and where all 459 live.
The game calls the Chuchu “a low-level, gel-based monster” found all over Hyrule that springs at unsuspecting prey “from the ground or from trees”. Breath of the Wild has four kinds, the normal Chuchu and the Fire, Ice and Electric Chuchus, each in a small, medium and large size. This page gives their HP and drops from the game’s data, explains how to fight them, what each jelly is good for, and counts all 459 placed Chuchus by kind and tower region. For the sequel see the Tears of the Kingdom Chuchu page; the other monster families are in the enemy overview.
How much HP does each Chuchu have?
| Size | Chuchu | Fire, Ice, Electric Chuchu |
|---|---|---|
| Small | 3 | 12 |
| Medium | 20 | 20 |
| Large | 48 | 48 |
The HP is from the game’s parameter files. Small ones are the only size where the kind matters: a small elemental Chuchu has four times the HP of a small normal one. None of the placed Chuchus is set to grow with world level, so a small Chuchu stays small.
What do the four kinds look like?
| Chuchu | Looks | Drops |
|---|---|---|
| Chuchu | Blue jelly with orange eyes | Chuchu Jelly |
| Fire Chuchu | Orange, wrapped in flames | Red Chuchu Jelly |
| Ice Chuchu | Pale blue-white, wrapped in freezing air | White Chuchu Jelly |
| Electric Chuchu | Yellow-green, crackling with electricity | Yellow Chuchu Jelly |
The game describes the elemental kinds as “engulfed in” flames, freezing-cold air or electricity, and each “tends to explode if attacked from close range”. In the game’s data each of them leaves a field of its element when it bursts, so the explosion catches Link if he is standing next to it.
How do you beat Chuchus?
- Fight from range. The game advises “spears, arrows, and other ranged weapons” against the elemental kinds, which burst when hit up close. A small normal Chuchu, with 3 HP, falls to any hit.
- Choose your jelly with the element. Heat, cool or shock a normal Chuchu before it dies and it drops Red, White or Yellow Chuchu Jelly instead of the plain kind.
- Large Chuchus first. A large one drops 3–6 jellies, so in a mixed group it is the best prize.
How much jelly does each Chuchu drop?
| Size | Sure drop | Extra jelly |
|---|---|---|
| Small | 1 | one more at 30% (Electric Chuchu 60%) |
| Medium | 2 | 1–2 more rolls at 60% |
| Large | 3 | 2 more rolls at 80% (Fire, Ice and Electric: 2–3) |
Rates are from the game’s drop tables. A Chuchu drops Chuchu Jelly, a Fire Chuchu Red Chuchu Jelly, an Ice Chuchu White Chuchu Jelly and an Electric Chuchu Yellow Chuchu Jelly.
What is Chuchu Jelly good for?
- Throwing. The item descriptions say a struck jelly bursts: Red Chuchu Jelly “in a ball of flame”, White “in a cold mist”, Yellow “in a burst of electric current”. Drop one near enemies and hit it.
- Changing color. Plain Chuchu Jelly is described as unstable: elemental stimulation changes its form. A fire, ice or shock arrow at plain jelly on the ground turns it into the colored kind.
- Elixirs. Jellies are monster parts; cooked with a critter they make an elixir whose effect the critter decides. See best recipes and all recipes.
- Armor upgrades. 5 Chuchu Jelly and 3 Bokoblin Guts take each Soldier’s piece to one star (the Hylian and Soldier’s sets). Red Chuchu Jelly upgrades the Snowquill set, White the Desert Voe set and Yellow the Rubber set. Full list: upgrade materials.
- Selling. A shop pays 5 rupees for Chuchu Jelly and 10 for Red, White or Yellow.

A Chuchu counts toward the region of the nearest shrine. With this many spawns a map would be a solid carpet of dots, so the table counts them instead.
- Fire Chuchus: Eldin holds 128 of the 170, around the lakes and islands of Death Mountain’s lava fields.
- Ice Chuchus: snowy ground, above all the Gerudo Highlands (Gerudo tower region, 26), Mount Hylia and the River of the Dead on the Great Plateau (24) and Hebra (18).
- Electric Chuchus: the Wasteland tower region, mostly around Gerudo Canyon (29), and Faron (18).
- Normal Chuchus: the grasslands, most of all Dueling Peaks (24) and Woodland (19).
