BotW Cold Resistance Guide: Warm Doublet, Food, and Armor
Get the Warm Doublet early, cook reliable cold-resistance food, choose warm armor, read severe-cold levels, and fix the reasons Link still loses hearts.
Cold resistance in Breath of the Wild is a two-level system. The early Warm Doublet covers ordinary cold, but colder elevations need another source of warmth. Check the thermometer before climbing: the same outfit can be safe lower down and fail higher on the mountain.
What is the fastest way to get warm clothes early?
The quickest route while following the Great Plateau shrine path is to cook the nearby Spicy Peppers, light the camp torch, and climb to Mount Hylia’s summit before completing the Plateau. Speak to the Old Man at the King’s Tomb and he gives you the Warm Doublet.
| Early route | Condition | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Mount Hylia summit | Reach the Old Man at the summit before finishing the Great Plateau, without already owning the garment | Warm Doublet |
| Old Man’s recipe | Cook one Spicy Pepper, one Raw Meat, and one Hyrule Bass; show the Spicy Meat and Seafood Fry to him at his cabin or in the Forest of Spirits | Warm Doublet |
| Cabin fallback | Receive the Paraglider without claiming either early reward, then return to the cabin | Warm Doublet in a chest |
| Later purchase | Reach the clothing shop in Hateno Village | Warm Doublet for sale |
The Warm Doublet gives one level of cold resistance and cannot be upgraded. It is enough for the first snowy route, but not every mountain in Hyrule. If you are planning the rest of the opening hours, our Divine Beast order guide helps sequence the colder northwest route.
Which cold-resistance foods should I cook?
Use ingredients with the Spicy effect and do not mix in ingredients carrying a different timed effect. A recipe reaches level two at six total effect points. Each matching cold-resistance ingredient below adds 2:30 under the normal, non-critical cooking result.
| Ingredient | Hidden effect points | Time added | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spicy Pepper | 1 | 2:30 | Easy Great Plateau ingredient |
| Warm Safflina | 1 | 2:30 | Five copies total five points, below the level-two threshold |
| Sunshroom | 2 | 2:30 | Three copies reliably reach level two |
| Sizzlefin Trout | 3 in datamined parameters; 2 in another published table | 2:30 | Source conflict; three copies reach level two either way |
| Reliable recipe | Cold resistance | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| 1 Spicy Pepper | Level 1 | 2:30 |
| 5 Spicy Peppers | Level 1 | 12:30 |
| 3 Sunshrooms | Level 2 | 7:30 |
| 3 Sizzlefin Trout | Level 2 under both reported point values | 7:30 |
Five peppers last a long time but still do not cross the six-point threshold. For a predictable severe-cold meal, use three Sunshrooms; the trout recipe is also safe at three fish despite the documented point-value conflict. More general healing and buff combinations are collected in the best BotW recipes.
Only one timed food effect can remain active. Eating an attack, defense, or speed dish while relying on Spicy food replaces the cold-resistance timer, though armor and food can work together.
Which armor gives cold resistance?
Every item in this table contributes one level. Because cold resistance caps at level two, choose any two compatible sources rather than buying every Snowquill piece only for environmental protection.
| Armor | Set | Cold resistance | Where to get it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Warm Doublet | Standalone | Level 1 | Old Man reward, cabin fallback chest, or Hateno Village clothing shop |
| Snowquill Headdress | Snowquill Set | Level 1 | Brazen Beak in Rito Village |
| Snowquill Tunic | Snowquill Set | Level 1 | Brazen Beak in Rito Village |
| Snowquill Trousers | Snowquill Set | Level 1 | Brazen Beak in Rito Village |
| Ruby Circlet | Standalone headwear | Level 1 | Starlight Memories in Gerudo Town, or chosen as the Tools of the Trade reward |
| Vah Medoh Divine Helm | Amiibo headwear | Level 1 | Scan the Revali amiibo |
The Snowquill Set has a separate Unfreezable bonus when every piece has been enhanced at least twice and the full set is worn. That bonus stops freezing, but it does not turn cold water into safe water. See the BotW armor upgrade materials guide before spending rare materials on the complete set.
How can I tell when an area needs level-two protection?
Use the temperature gauge rather than the region name. Below 0°C, Link enters ordinary cold and needs one protection level. Below -10°C, the game enters its more severe cold band and needs two levels; health also drains faster without enough protection.
| Gauge state | Protection needed | Practical setup |
|---|---|---|
| Cold below 0°C | Level 1 | Warm Doublet, one Snowquill piece, or level-one Spicy food |
| Severe cold below -10°C | Level 2 | Two armor pieces, level-two food, or one armor level plus one food or heat source |
Temperature changes with location and time. Recheck the gauge after climbing, at night, or when the weather shifts instead of assuming the protection that worked lower down will remain enough.
If you still lose hearts while dressed for the cold, check these causes:
- The Warm Doublet supplies only level one, but the current band requires level two.
- Your food timer expired or was replaced by another timed meal.
- You entered cold water. Armor, food, and elixirs do not prevent that damage.
- An ice attack hit you. Environmental cold resistance is not ice-attack immunity.
- Your portable flame went out or you moved beyond the campfire’s heated area.
Can a torch, campfire, or fire weapon replace warm armor?
Temporarily, yes. A lit torch warms Link while he carries it, and a campfire or lit cooking pot warms the nearby area. An equipped fire-element weapon also raises Link’s temperature by roughly one cold band, making it useful alongside the Warm Doublet in severe cold.
| Temporary method | Actual effect | Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Lit torch | Portable warmth while held | Must stay lit; cannot be held while climbing |
| Campfire or lit cooking pot | Warms Link nearby | Stationary; protection ends when you move away |
| Equipped fire-element weapon | Portable temperature increase comparable to one cold level | Must remain equipped |
| Raw Spicy Pepper | No cold resistance | Cook it in a pot first |
| Cooked Spicy food | Level one or two, depending on total points | Timer expires and another timed dish replaces it |
These methods are excellent backups, but armor is the least distracting solution for long climbs. If you are deciding whether to continue into the sequel after this run, Breath of the Wild vs Tears of the Kingdom explains the broader differences without assuming one game replaces the other.
