BotW Elixirs: All 11, How to Make Them, Levels and Duration
How elixirs work in Breath of the Wild: the 11 elixirs and their critters, the critter-plus-monster-part rule, how levels and duration add up, and what food adds.
Elixirs are the other half of cooking in Breath of the Wild: instead of food, you put critters and monster parts in the pot. This page covers what each elixir does, the rule that makes one, and how its level and duration are worked out. Every number below comes from the game’s cooking data. For meals, see the effect pages; for every recipe in one table, see all recipes.
What are the 11 elixirs in Breath of the Wild?
The game has a single Elixir dish that takes its name from its effect, so there are 11 elixirs, one per effect. The critter decides which one you get. “Strength” is the critter’s value for its effect; the strengths in the pot add up to the level.
| Elixir | What it does | Critters (strength) | Levels |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hearty Elixir | Full heal plus extra hearts | Hearty Lizard (16) | — |
| Energizing Elixir | Restores stamina | Energetic Rhino Beetle (6), Restless Cricket (1) | — |
| Enduring Elixir | Restores stamina and adds an extra wheel section | Tireless Frog (2) | — |
| Hasty Elixir | Faster running, climbing and swimming | Hot-Footed Frog (2), Hightail Lizard (1) | 3 |
| Mighty Elixir | Attack up | Bladed Rhino Beetle (1) | 3 |
| Tough Elixir | Defense up | Rugged Rhino Beetle (1) | 3 |
| Spicy Elixir | Cold resistance | Warm Darner (2), Summerwing Butterfly (1) | 2 |
| Chilly Elixir | Heat resistance | Cold Darner (2), Winterwing Butterfly (1) | 2 |
| Electro Elixir | Shock resistance | Electric Darner (2), Thunderwing Butterfly (1) | 3 |
| Fireproof Elixir | Keeps you from catching fire | Smotherwing Butterfly (2), Fireproof Lizard (1) | 2 |
| Sneaky Elixir | Stealth up | Sunset Firefly (1) | 3 |
Fireproof exists only as an elixir: no food carries it (see Fireproof). A Fairy in the pot is a different dish, Fairy Tonic.

How do you make an elixir?
Put at least one critter and at least one monster part in a cooking pot, five ingredients at most. As the character Sagessa puts it: “You can make elixirs by mixing bugs and other small creatures with monster parts.”
| What is in the pot | Result |
|---|---|
| Critters of one effect + monster parts | That elixir |
| The same, plus plain food (apples, mushrooms, meat…) | Still that elixir; the food’s hearts are added |
| The same, plus food with the same effect (e.g. Swift Violet in a Hasty Elixir) | That elixir; the food’s strength counts too |
| Critters only, or monster parts only | Dubious Food |
| Two effects in one pot (two kinds of critter, or a critter and food with another effect) | Dubious Food |
Catching critters is half the work: many live only in certain places, which the effect pages list. Fireproof Lizards, for instance, are found only in the Eldin region.
How are an elixir’s level and duration worked out?
Level comes from the critters (and any food with the same effect). Add up their strength and compare it with the thresholds:
| Effect | Level 2 at | Level 3 at |
|---|---|---|
| Hasty, Mighty, Tough | 5 | 7 |
| Electro | 4 | 6 |
| Sneaky | 6 | 9 |
| Spicy, Chilly | 6 | — |
| Fireproof | 7 | — |
Since an elixir needs one monster-part slot, it holds at most four critters. Four Hot-Footed Frogs (8) and four Electric Darners (8) reach level 3; four Warm Darners, Cold Darners or Smotherwing Butterflies reach level 2, the top for those effects. But Mighty, Tough and Sneaky critters have strength 1, so four make 4 and the elixir stays at level 1: cook a Mighty meal instead.
Duration adds up per ingredient, up to 30:00:
| Ingredient | Adds |
|---|---|
| Hasty critter | 1:00 |
| Mighty or Tough critter | 0:50 |
| Sneaky critter | 2:00 |
| Spicy, Chilly, Electro or Fireproof critter | 2:30 |
| Monster part, low tier: horns, Chuchu Jelly, Keese Wing, Octorok Tentacle, Octo Balloon, Hinox Toenail, Ancient Screw, Ancient Spring | 1:10 |
| Monster part, middle tier: fangs, Lizalfos Talon, Lynel Hoof, colored Chuchu Jelly, elemental Keese Wings, Octorok Eyeball, Hinox Tooth, Ancient Gear, Ancient Shaft, Molduga Fin | 1:50 |
| Monster part, top tier: all guts, Lizalfos Tails, Keese Eyeball, Ancient Core, Giant Ancient Core | 3:10 |
| Any other ingredient | 0:30 |
The monster part never changes the level, so pick it for time (or for price). A Critical Success adds 5:00.
| Pot | Elixir | With Bokoblin Horn | With Bokoblin Guts |

| Hot-Footed Frog ×4 + part | Hasty | Lv3 · 5:10 | Lv3 · 7:10 |

What do the Hearty, Energizing and Enduring Elixirs do?
These three have no timer; they act the moment you drink them.
- Hearty Elixir restores all your hearts and adds extra hearts: 4 per Hearty Lizard, so four lizards give 16.
- Energizing Elixir refills stamina: an Energetic Rhino Beetle restores one wheel and three-fifths, a Restless Cricket one-fifth. See Energizing.
- Enduring Elixir restores stamina and adds one-fifth of an extra wheel per Tireless Frog. By the cooking data each frog also restores 4 hearts. See Enduring.
How are elixirs different from meals?
| Meal | Elixir | |
|---|---|---|
| Needs | At least one food ingredient | A critter and a monster part |
| Healing | From its ingredients | None, unless you add food (Hearty and Tireless Frog aside) |
| Strongest level | Five ingredients can carry the effect | At most four critters; Mighty, Tough and Sneaky stay at level 1 |
| Extra time | 0:30 per plain ingredient | Monster parts add 1:10 to 3:10 each |
| Effects only here | — | Fireproof |
Sagessa adds that elixirs are “no good for refilling your health”, which holds until you add food. A book in Gerudo Town gives the tip: add acorns or Chickaloo Tree Nuts “to impart your elixir with minor healing properties.”
How much do elixirs sell for?
Like meals, an elixir sells for the sum of its ingredients’ sell prices times a factor for how many there are, rounded up to the nearest 10. Critters are worth little, so the price comes almost entirely from the monster parts: four Hot-Footed Frogs and a Bokoblin Horn sell for 30 rupees, while four Lynel Guts and an Energetic Rhino Beetle sell for 2,330. The best recipes page covers selling in full.
