BotW Chilly Food: Heat Resistance Recipes and Ingredients
Chilly food in Breath of the Wild: the 6 ingredients that give heat resistance, how Lv1 and Lv2 work, the easiest recipes and where to find them.
What does Chilly food do in Breath of the Wild?
Chilly food cools Link down; the elixir’s description calls it crucial for long journeys through the desert. It has two levels and adds 2:30 per ingredient, so even a small pot lasts a while. It does not protect against the fire of Death Mountain: that is Fireproof.
The game says: “Grants low-level heat resistance.” The elixir’s description: “Grants a low-level cooling effect, raising your body’s resistance to heat. Crucial for long journeys through the desert.”
Which ingredients give Chilly?
Six ingredients carry it. The strengths of the matching ingredients in one pot add up, and a total of 6 or more makes Lv2, and Lv2 is the ceiling; anything below 6 is Lv1. Duration adds up per piece: each effect ingredient adds 2:30, up to the 30:00 cap.
| Ingredient | Type | Strength | Time each | Sells for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chillfin Trout | Fish / seafood | 3 | 2:30 | 6 |
| Chillshroom | Mushroom | 2 | 2:30 | 4 |
| Cold Darner | Critter | 2 | 2:30 | 2 |
| Hydromelon | Fruit | 1 | 2:30 | 4 |
| Cool Safflina | Plant | 1 | 2:30 | 3 |
| Winterwing Butterfly | Critter | 1 | 2:30 | 2 |
Chillfin Trout is the only ingredient with strength 3. Chillshroom and Cold Darner have 2; Winterwing Butterfly, Hydromelon and Cool Safflina have 1. Cold Darner and Winterwing Butterfly are critters, so they only make the Chilly Elixir.
What is the easiest way to cook a Chilly dish?
Every row below was run through the cooking simulator built on the game’s data. “Lv” is the effect level and the time is how long it lasts.
| What goes in the pot | Result | Effect | Restores |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chillshroom ×1 | Mushroom Skewer | Lv1 · 2:30 | 1 heart |
| Chillshroom ×3 | Mushroom Skewer | Lv2 · 7:30 | 3 hearts |
| Chillfin Trout ×2 | Fish Skewer | Lv2 · 5:00 | 4 hearts |
| Hydromelon ×5 | Simmered Fruit | Lv1 · 12:30 | 5 hearts |
| Chillshroom ×1 + Hydromelon ×4 | Fruit and Mushroom Mix | Lv2 · 12:30 | 5 hearts |
| Cold Darner ×3 + Bokoblin Horn ×1 | Chilly Elixir | Lv2 · 8:40 | — |
| Chillshroom ×3 + Shard of Dinraal’s Horn ×1 | Mushroom Skewer | Lv2 · 30:00 | 6.75 hearts |
The Hydromelon is the ingredient you find in the desert itself, but on its own it cannot reach Lv2. Four Hydromelons with one Chillshroom give Lv2 and 12:30, longer than three Chillshrooms. If you already have the Gerudo or Desert Voe armor, the food only needs to cover what the armor does not.
Where do you find Chilly ingredients?
The compendium column is what the Hyrule Compendium shows for each entry. The last column counts where the map data places plants, mushrooms and fruit; fish and critters mostly appear from area spawns, so they have no count.
| Ingredient | Compendium: common locations | Fixed placements in the map data |
|---|---|---|
| Chillfin Trout | Tabantha Frontier, Hebra Mountains | — |
| Chillshroom | Hebra Mountains, Mount Lanayru | 287; most near Naydra Snowfield, S. Tabantha Snowfield, Spring of Wisdom |
| Cold Darner | Tabantha Frontier, Hyrule Ridge | — |
| Hydromelon | Gerudo Desert, Faron Grasslands | 187; most near Gerudo Town, East Barrens, Sand-Seal Rally |
| Cool Safflina | Hebra Mountains, Gerudo Highlands | 305; most near Mount Granajh, Daval Peak, Pikida Stonegrove |
| Winterwing Butterfly | Hyrule Ridge, Tabantha Frontier | — |
Almost every placed Hydromelon is in the Gerudo Desert, 35 of them around Gerudo Town. Chillshrooms grow in snow: the Naydra Snowfield on Mount Lanayru and the South Tabantha Snowfield have the most. Cool Safflina is most common on the Hebra and Gerudo peaks. The game’s description says Chillfin Trout prefer cold water; the compendium lists Tabantha Frontier and Hebra Mountains.
