BotW Keese: All 4 Kinds, HP, Drops and Where They Spawn
Keese, Fire Keese, Ice Keese and Electric Keese in Breath of the Wild: HP, wing and eyeball drop rates, how to handle a swarm and where each kind spawns.
The game describes the Keese as a “nocturnal bat-like species” with an unpredictable flight pattern, and adds that it is “weak enough to fell with a single strike”. Breath of the Wild has four kinds, all with 1 HP. This page covers how they differ, what they drop according to the game’s drop tables, and where the game places them. The Tears of the Kingdom version, where the drops changed, is on the Tears of the Kingdom Keese page; the other monsters are in the enemy overview.
What kinds of Keese are there?
| Kind | HP | What touching it does |
|---|---|---|
| Keese | 1 | A bite, nothing more |
| Fire Keese | 1 | Sets you on fire |
| Ice Keese | 1 | Freezes you |
| Electric Keese | 1 | Shocks you |
The HP comes from the game’s parameter files and the effects from the Hyrule Compendium: the three elemental kinds are “engulfed” in fire, frost or electricity and are “capable of” burning, freezing or shocking “anything they touch”. With 1 HP each, the danger is only in letting them reach you.
How do you beat Keese?
- One hit each. The game puts it plainly: Keese sometimes “attack in packs, but even then, a pack can be sent packing with a single attack”. A wide swing catches several at once.
- Keep elemental Keese at a distance. A Fire, Ice or Electric Keese only hurts you by touching you, so arrows and spears are the safe way to take them down.
- Use bombs and Bomb Arrows on a swarm. A swarm packs dozens of Keese together, and every one of them has 1 HP.
- Watch the grass around Fire Keese. Since a Fire Keese sets fire to anything it touches, it can start a grass fire around you.
What do Keese drop?
| Kind | Every kill | Chance |
|---|---|---|
| Keese | Keese Wing ×1–2 | Keese Eyeball 30% |
| Fire Keese | Fire Keese Wing ×1–2 | Keese Eyeball 30% |
| Ice Keese | Ice Keese Wing ×1–2 | Keese Eyeball 30% |
| Electric Keese | Electric Keese Wing ×1–2 | Keese Eyeball 30% |
Rates are from the game’s drop tables: one table drops the wing one or two times, the other rolls once for the eyeball at 30%. All four kinds share the plain Keese Eyeball. The game calls it a “rare material” that “must be good for something”.
- Elixirs. The game’s own description of the Keese Wing says to “mix it with critters to make something useful”, and the Electric Keese Wing to “toss it in with some critters to make elixirs”. Recipes are in all recipes.
- Armor upgrades. The Climbing set needs 3 Keese Wings per piece at one star, then 5 Electric Keese Wings, 5 Ice Keese Wings and 5 Fire Keese Wings. The Soldier’s set needs 3 Keese Eyeballs per piece at two stars. Full lists in upgrade materials and on the Climbing set page.
Where do Keese spawn?
The game places 381 Keese. They are set in small groups, and the placement data puts them at 146 spots; the table counts those spots by tower region. With this many, the page gives totals rather than a map.
| Tower region | Keese | Fire Keese | Ice Keese | Electric Keese |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Great Plateau | 9 | — | 11 | — |
| Central | 12 | 2 | 3 | 1 |
| Woodland | 11 | 2 | — | 1 |
| Akkala | 9 | — | — | — |
| Lanayru | 8 | — | — | 3 |
| Eldin | 3 | 18 | — | — |
| Hebra | 6 | — | 4 | — |

| Wasteland | 2 | — | — | 2 |
| Lake | 2 | — | — | — |
| Total | 88 | 22 | 25 | 11 |
- Fire Keese are an Eldin monster: 18 of the 22 groups are there.
- Ice Keese follow the snow: 11 groups on the Great Plateau, where Mount Hylia is, and the rest mostly in Hebra and the Gerudo Highlands.
- Electric Keese are the rarest, 11 groups spread across Lanayru, Hateno and the Wasteland among others.
- Regular Keese are everywhere, with Central Hyrule and Woodland holding the most.
For the rest of Hyrule’s monsters see the enemy overview. The big ones have their own pages: Hinox, Lynels and Stone Taluses.
