BotW Spicy Food: Cold Resistance Recipes and Ingredients
Spicy food in Breath of the Wild: the 6 ingredients that give cold resistance, how Lv1 and Lv2 work, the easiest recipes and where to find them.
What does Spicy food do in Breath of the Wild?
Spicy food warms Link up; the elixir’s description says it is very useful on snow-covered mountains. It has two levels and adds 2:30 per ingredient. It is what gets you through the Great Plateau’s Mount Hylia before you have warm clothes, and through Hebra and the desert at night later on.
The game says: “Grants low-level cold resistance.” The elixir’s description: “Grants a low-level warming effect, increasing your resistance to cold environments. Very useful when exploring snow-covered mountains.”
Which ingredients give Spicy?
Six ingredients carry it. The strengths of the matching ingredients in one pot add up, and a total of 6 or more makes Lv2, and Lv2 is the ceiling; anything below 6 is Lv1. Duration adds up per piece: each effect ingredient adds 2:30, up to the 30:00 cap.
| Ingredient | Type | Strength | Time each | Sells for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sizzlefin Trout | Fish / seafood | 3 | 2:30 | 6 |
| Sunshroom | Mushroom | 2 | 2:30 | 4 |
| Warm Darner | Critter | 2 | 2:30 | 2 |
| Warm Safflina | Plant | 1 | 2:30 | 3 |
| Spicy Pepper | Fruit | 1 | 2:30 | 3 |
| Summerwing Butterfly | Critter | 1 | 2:30 | 2 |
Sizzlefin Trout is the only ingredient with strength 3. Sunshroom and Warm Darner have 2; Warm Safflina, Spicy Pepper and Summerwing Butterfly have 1. Warm Darner and Summerwing Butterfly are critters, so they only make the Spicy Elixir.
What is the easiest way to cook a Spicy dish?
Every row below was run through the cooking simulator built on the game’s data. “Lv” is the effect level and the time is how long it lasts.
| What goes in the pot | Result | Effect | Restores |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spicy Pepper ×1 | Sautéed Peppers | Lv1 · 2:30 | 1 heart |
| Sunshroom ×3 | Mushroom Skewer | Lv2 · 7:30 | 3 hearts |
| Sizzlefin Trout ×2 | Fish Skewer | Lv2 · 5:00 | 4 hearts |
| Spicy Pepper ×5 | Sautéed Peppers | Lv1 · 12:30 | 5 hearts |
| Sunshroom ×1 + Spicy Pepper ×4 | Fruit and Mushroom Mix | Lv2 · 12:30 | 5 hearts |
| Warm Darner ×3 + Bokoblin Horn ×1 | Spicy Elixir | Lv2 · 8:40 | — |
| Sunshroom ×3 + Shard of Dinraal’s Horn ×1 | Mushroom Skewer | Lv2 · 30:00 | 6.75 hearts |
Spicy Peppers are the most common Spicy ingredient, and a single one already gives Lv1 for 2:30, which is enough for a short cold stretch. For Lv2, mix four peppers with a Sunshroom for 12:30. Once you own cold-resistant armor, see the cold resistance guide for what the armor already covers.
Where do you find Spicy ingredients?
The compendium column is what the Hyrule Compendium shows for each entry. The last column counts where the map data places plants, mushrooms and fruit; fish and critters mostly appear from area spawns, so they have no count.
| Ingredient | Compendium: common locations | Fixed placements in the map data |
|---|---|---|
| Sizzlefin Trout | Eldin Canyon, Eldin Mountains | — |
| Sunshroom | Eldin Canyon, Gerudo Highlands | 118; most near Gut Check Rock, Retsam Forest, Nima Plain |
| Warm Darner | Akkala Highlands, Hyrule Field | — |
| Warm Safflina | Gerudo Desert, Hyrule Ridge | 78; most near Northern Icehouse, West Gerudo Ruins, Great Cliffs |
| Spicy Pepper | Gerudo Desert, Tabantha Frontier | 489; most near Rito Stable, Warbler’s Nest, Satori Mountain |
| Summerwing Butterfly | Great Hyrule Forest, Eldin Mountains | — |
Spicy Peppers grow around Rito Stable, Warbler’s Nest and Satori Mountain, and across the Wasteland tower region. Sunshrooms are most common in Eldin, with 24 at Gut Check Rock. Warm Safflina grows in the Gerudo region, much of it near the Northern Icehouse. The game’s description says Sizzlefin Trout prefer warm water; the compendium lists Eldin Canyon and the Eldin Mountains.
