TotK Hylian Shield Location and How to Get It Back

The Hylian Shield in Tears of the Kingdom is in a chest at the Docks under Hyrule Castle. The chest is not there at first: light the large brazier on the top landing and it appears. If the shield later breaks, Cece in Hateno Village sells another for 3,000 rupees.

Where is the Hylian Shield?

In the Docks, a cave harbor in the cliff under Hyrule Castle, north of Lookout Landing. The chest appears at -0154, 1157, 0141, on the highest landing above the water. No quest is needed, so you can go as soon as you have the Paraglider.

There are two ways in:

• By water. From the island with the Castle Town Prison, west of the castle, take a raft around to the north side of the moat. A small cave mouth in the cliff leads straight into the Docks.
• From above. Activate Serutabomac Shrine inside Hyrule Castle, the nearest warp point, then drop down the cliff below it to the opening that leads to the Docks.

How do you make the chest appear?

Climb the stairs to the top landing. A large unlit brazier stands in the middle of a ring of small lit torches. Light the brazier and the chest appears on the floor nearby.

Anything that makes fire works: throw a Fire Fruit or a Red Chuchu Jelly into the brazier, or carry a burning Torch over from one of the small ones.

What are the Hylian Shield’s stats?

Guard 90 and durability 800, both the highest of any shield. The other 32 shields have 594 durability between them. The comparison is on the shields page.

Like any shield, it takes a fused material: the material’s fuse attack goes into the shield bash, and some materials add an effect.

What if the Hylian Shield breaks?

It can break, but you can always get another. Cece sells the Hylian Shield for 3,000 rupees at her shop in Hateno Village once the side adventure The Mayoral Election is finished. Her list reportedly only holds rare items you have already found, so open the Docks chest first.

Can you get a second Hylian Shield?

No. The Docks chest gives one, and Cece shows the shield as Sold Out for as long as you still have one. She sells again only after yours is gone.

Can you repair the Hylian Shield?

Yes, and it is cheaper than buying a new one. When the game warns that it is badly damaged, let a Rock Octorok suck it in: it spits the shield back fully repaired, with a random bonus. Rock Octoroks are common around Death Mountain in Eldin. The steps are on the weapon durability page.
