Breath of the Wild has 16 minigames scattered across Hyrule. Most are run by one character, cost 20 rupees a try, and reward you by score. A few pay in horse gear or shields, and three of them are how a hidden shrine appears. For more ways to earn money see rupee farming; for the quests around them see side quests.

Which minigames give horse gear or shields?

Horseback archery at the Mounted Archery Camp

Talk to Jini while riding a horse; if you are on foot he tells you to fetch one. Each run costs 20 rupees, and you shoot the balloon targets set out on Parache Plains without dismounting. He gives his horse gear for a high score: break more than 20 targets for the Knight’s Bridle and more than 23 for the Knight’s Saddle. More about both saddles is in the horses guide.

Obstacle course at Highland Stable

Blynne runs a 20-rupee course across Fural Plain. Ride a registered horse, jump all 10 obstacles, then cross the finish line; dismounting disqualifies you. His record is 1 minute 15 seconds, and he suggests aiming for 1:30 first. Finishing in under 1:30 gives the Extravagant Bridle, and beating his 1:15 gives the Extravagant Saddle.

Shield surfing at Selmie’s Spot

Selmie charges 20 rupees per run and has two slopes. Clear the beginner slope to unlock the advanced one; on the advanced slope she hands over a commemorative shield picked by your time. Reportedly the fastest runs, under 1:30, earn a Royal Shield, and the slowest a Wooden Shield. Once she has given you every shield, she pays rupees instead. Make room in your shield pouch first, or she holds the prize.

Which minigames open a shrine?

  • Gut Check Rock (The Gut Check Challenge). Bayge blocks Gorae Torr Shrine. Climb Gut Check Rock in under 3 minutes while picking up at least 100 rupees on the way. During the shrine quest a try costs 20; afterwards 50. The harder version costs 100, needs 300 rupees, and pays an Endura Shroom. See Gorae Torr Shrine.
  • Sand-Seal Rally (The Undefeated Champ). Ride a sand seal on your shield through every arch to the goal; falling off or leaving the course disqualifies you. Beat Tali’s time to win the orb that reveals Raqa Zunzo Shrine. Afterwards, reportedly 100 rupees a try, a new record pays a Gold Rupee.
  • The Test of Wood. Damia in Korok Forest lends you Forest Dweller’s gear; reach Maag Halan Shrine without it breaking or coming off. Replays are timed, and reaching the shrine within 5 minutes pays a Silver Rupee.

Which minigames are best for rupees?

Snowball Bowling at Pondo’s Lodge

Pondo sets up 10 pins at the foot of the slope. A game is 20 rupees and you get two rolls; all 10 on the first roll is a strike, all 10 over both rolls a spare. A strike pays a Gold Rupee (300); the first strike is said to give a Blizzard Rod instead. Reportedly 7–8 pins give a Red Rupee, 9 a Purple Rupee and a spare a Silver Rupee. Bring cold protection; see cold resistance.

Blue Flame run at East Akkala Stable

Aya wants the lantern beside her lit with the blue flame. Each run costs 20 rupees, which she calls a horse-handling fee. The time limit drops each round: 3 minutes for a Purple Rupee, 1 minute for a Silver Rupee, then 20 seconds for a Gold Rupee. After that every run pays only 20 rupees. Lighting the lantern just north of the stable beforehand makes the trip much shorter.

Other rupee games

  • Boom Bam Golf. Modar runs it at the Tanagar Canyon Course. Freeze the ball with Stasis, hit it, and sink it in 20 strokes or fewer. Four or five strokes earn a Purple Rupee, and reportedly three or fewer a Silver Rupee.
  • Bird-man study. Glide as far as you can from the top of Ridgeland Tower for Branli. A middling distance gets 50 rupees, after he first offers 21; the longest flights get a Silver Rupee. Reportedly the tiers are 450 m and 600 m. Revali’s Gale gives a higher start.
  • Footrace. Konba bets you 20 rupees that he can reach the flags on Mount Rhoam first. No horses. Beat him for a Purple Rupee.
  • Paraglider rings. Mimo appears on Eventide Island, reportedly after Korgu Chideh Shrine. Glide through as many floating rings as you can; landing ends the run. Reportedly there are 70 rings and 50 or more earn a Gold Rupee.
  • Ice delivery. After the shrine quest “The Perfect Drink”, Anche at the Northern Icehouse lets you carry more ice to Furosa for 50 rupees. Reportedly delivering it in under 2 minutes pays a Gold Rupee.
  • Deer hunting. Dantz in Hateno Village sends you to Retsam Forest to hunt as many deer as you can in 1 minute. It is free and pays small amounts.
  • Flight Range targets. After Divine Beast Vah Medoh, Tulin times you shooting targets at the Flight Range. Reportedly breaking all 20 earns a Gold Rupee.
  • Treasure-chest gamble. Cloyne in Lurelin Village takes a bet of 10, 50 or 100 rupees; only one of three chests wins.
