BotW Rupee Farming: Best Ways to Make Money by Stage
How to farm rupees in Breath of the Wild, early, mid and late game: gems, gourmet meat, Juney's apples, Ramella, snowball bowling, Rare Taluses and Farosh.
Rupees in Breath of the Wild come mostly from selling things and from a few people who pay better than a shop. This page goes through the steady ways to earn them in the order you reach them: what you need first, what to do, and what one run pays. Every sell price is the game’s own.
How do you make rupees fast in Breath of the Wild?
| Stage | Method | What you need | What one run pays |
|---|---|---|---|
| Early | Mine ore deposits, sell the gems | A weapon or bomb to break the rock | Diamond 500, Sapphire 260, Ruby 210, Topaz 180 |
| Early | Raw Gourmet Meat to Trott, or Meat Skewers | Finish A Rare Find at Outskirt Stable; a cooking pot | 100 per meat to Trott; 490 per skewer of five |
| Early | Baked apples to Juney | Reach Rito Village, finish The Apple of My Eye | 1,200 for 100 baked apples |
| Mid | Sell gems to Ramella | Divine Beast Vah Rudania done; ten of the gem she asks for | 2,000 to 5,500 per ten |
| Mid | Snowball bowling | Reach Pondo’s Lodge in Hebra; cold protection | 300 per strike, 20 per game |
| Mid | Rare Taluses | Weapons to beat a 900 HP Talus | Up to two gems at 50% Diamond each, plus 6–10 ore |
| Late | Farosh’s horn | A bow; Riola Spring at 5:00 AM | 300 per shard, one each morning |
| Late | Lynels | Endgame gear | Lynel Guts 200; a four-guts elixir 2,330 |
Where we give a rate per ten minutes, it is one guide’s estimate and we say so. Otherwise we give what one run pays, since that is the figure two sources agree on.

How do you earn rupees in the early game?
Mine ore deposits and sell the gems
The game’s own tip says it: gems that drop when you break ore deposits fetch a high price. Keep Topaz, Rubies, Sapphires and Diamonds for Ramella once you can reach her (below); sell the rest anywhere.
Sell Raw Gourmet Meat to Trott, or cook Meat Skewers
Raw Gourmet Meat drops from large animals such as the Tabantha Moose and the Great-Horned Rhinoceros. A shop pays 35 for a piece. Two better uses:
- Trott at Outskirt Stable. He starts the side quest A Rare Find; once you bring him one piece, he pays 100 rupees for each piece of Raw Gourmet Meat after that.
- A Meat Skewer. Five Raw Gourmet Meat in one pot make a Meat Skewer that sells for 490. The cooking rules are on the best recipes page.
Sell baked apples to Juney in Rito Village
Juney, in Rito Village, starts The Apple of My Eye. Drop an Apple next to a fire to bake it (a cooking pot would make a meal instead), and give her one. After that she buys baked apples at any time, and pays more per apple the more you bring:
| Baked apples | Juney pays | Per apple |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 5 | 5 |
| 5 | 30 | 6 |
| 10 | 70 | 7 |
| 30 | 250 | about 8.3 |
| 50 | 500 | 10 |
| 100 | 1,200 | 12 |
A shop pays 3 for a Baked Apple, so a stack of 100 earns four times as much here.
How do you earn more in the mid game?
Sell gems to Ramella in Goron City
Ramella, a Gerudo gem trader in Goron City, appears after you free Divine Beast Vah Rudania (see the Vah Rudania walkthrough). Her first request, the side quest The Jewel Trade, is ten Amber for 500 rupees, 200 more than a shop. After that she asks for ten of one gem at a time, and keeps asking for the same gem until you stop:
| Gem | Shop price for 10 | Ramella for 10 | Gain |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amber (The Jewel Trade, once) | 300 | 500 | +200 |
| Topaz | 1,800 | 2,000 | +200 |
| Ruby | 2,100 | 2,300 | +200 |
| Sapphire | 2,600 | 2,900 | +300 |
| Diamond | 5,000 | 5,500 | +500 |
She does not buy Opals or Luminous Stones.
Play Pondo’s snowball bowling
Pondo runs a bowling game with a snowball outside his lodge in Hebra. Bring cold protection first (see cold resistance).
- Go to Pondo’s Lodge, a short glide from Hebra Tower. Pondo is outside, patting down a snowball.
- Pay him 20 rupees to play. He sets up ten pins down the slope.
- Roll the snowball into the pins. A strike pays a Gold Rupee, which is 300 rupees. Talk to him again to play another game.
The first strike may pay a Blizzard Rod instead of rupees; only one of our sources mentions this. One guide estimates about 4,200 rupees in ten minutes of bowling; we found no second source for that rate.
Hunt Rare Taluses after each Blood Moon
A Stone Talus (Rare) is the best gem source in the game. There are seven. Each drops up to two gems from a roll of Diamond 50%, Topaz 20%, Ruby 15% or Sapphire 15%, plus 6–10 more ore drops that can also be gems. A Blood Moon brings defeated monsters back, so they are there again after every one. Locations and the fight are on the Talus page.
What earns the most in the late game?
Shoot Farosh’s horn every morning
Farosh, the lightning dragon, rises out of Riola Spring at 5:00 AM. Shot with an arrow, it drops the part you hit; the horn gives a Shard of Farosh’s Horn, which sells for 300.
- Travel to Shoda Sah Shrine, beside Riola Spring. See Shoda Sah Shrine.
- Rest at a campfire until morning. Farosh rises out of Riola Spring at 5:00 AM.
- Shoot Farosh’s horn with an arrow. The shard falls; pick it up.
- Wait for the next morning and repeat. Once shot, Farosh leaves until the next day, so it is one part per morning.
One guide puts this method at about 7,800 rupees in ten minutes; we found no second source for that rate.
Lynels, Silver Lynels and Star Fragments
Lynel Guts sell for 200, and cooked they are worth far more: four Lynel Guts and an Energetic Rhino Beetle make an elixir that sells for 2,330. White-Maned and Silver Lynels always drop guts, and a Silver Lynel adds 2–3 gems, each a Topaz, Ruby or Sapphire (30%) or a Diamond or Star Fragment (5%). See the Lynel page. Star Fragments fall at night and sell for 300.
For duplication instead of farming, see the glitches that still work.
