BotW Star Fragment Farming: When Stars Fall and Where to Look
Farm Star Fragments in Breath of the Wild: when shooting stars fall, how to find where they land, the Dueling Peaks lookout, eight one-off sources, upgrade totals.
A Star Fragment is “a mysterious stone fragment that fell from the sky”, in the game’s own words, and one of the rarest materials in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. One of the game’s tips says it plainly: if you see a star shoot through the night sky, mark where it lands, and you might find something there. This page covers when stars fall, how to get to the fragment before it vanishes, the eight one-off fragments worth collecting first, and how many you need.
When do shooting stars fall?
| Time | |
|---|---|
| First stars | From 9 PM |
| Most stars | In the first half of the night; the later it gets, the less likely |
| A landed fragment disappears | At 5 AM |
There is no guarantee of a star on any one night, and it can take a while. A star that falls in the small hours leaves you little time before 5 AM, which is one more reason to start watching at nightfall.
Some players believe stars fall more often on a full moon. Nothing in the game’s data confirms it, so treat it as a rumour: the method below works on any night.
How do you farm Star Fragments?
- Go to a high lookout over flat ground. The usual spot is the top of the Dueling Peaks: travel to Shee Vaneer Shrine and climb the slope behind it to the two stone statues. From there you look west over Central Hyrule.
- Light a fire and wait until morning, then until night. Bring wood and flint, or a fire weapon. Players who farm fragments sit through to morning first and then to night before each watch.
- Face the open field and watch. A star usually lands in the direction you are facing, so keep the camera on Hyrule Field rather than on mountains or water.
- Pin the landing spot. A falling star leaves a tall golden beam where it lands. Zoom in with the Scope and place a pin on it before you move.
- Warp close and run in. Travel to the shrine or tower nearest the pin, then glide, ride or run. Pick the fragment up before 5 AM.
- Repeat. Warp back to the shrine and sit by the fire again.
How do you find where it landed?
The pin is what gets you there after you warp. As you get close, the glow fades and the fragment becomes an item you can pick up.
Which one-off sources give Star Fragments?
The game places Star Fragments in six chests, and two side quests give one each. None of them comes back, but together they are eight fragments for far less waiting than a night watch.
| Source | Where | How |
|---|---|---|
| Chest | Military Training Camp | The chest is sunk in the mud; pull it out with Magnesis |
| Chest | The Docks under Hyrule Castle | Under water; pull it out with Magnesis |
| Chest | Thyphlo Ruins | On a raised platform with two torch stands |
| Chest | A plateau west of Spool Bight | Out in the open on the hidden plateau |
| Buried chest | Lurelin Village | The village dog digs it up after you feed it |
| Buried chest | Snowfield Stable | The stable dog digs it up after you feed it |
| Side quest My Hero | Outskirt Stable | Show Aliza the Master Sword |
| Side quest Balloon Flight | Woodland Stable | Help Shamae make a barrel fly with Octo Balloons |
How much meat the dogs need is reportedly three pieces. Both quests are on the side quest list.
Silver Lynels can drop them too: each one rolls 2–3 gems, and each roll has a 5% chance to be a Star Fragment. See the Lynel page.
How many Star Fragments do armor upgrades need?
Great Fairies take Star Fragments for these pieces. The numbers are for one piece, from no stars to four stars, by the game’s data.
| Armor | Per piece, by star | Pieces | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hero, Time, Twilight, Sky and Wind sets (amiibo) | 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 | 15 | 60 |
| Sheik’s Mask | 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 | 1 | 10 |
| Diamond Circlet, Ruby Circlet, Sapphire Circlet, Topaz Earrings | 0 + 0 + 1 + 1 | 4 | 8 |
| Set of the Wild | 0 + 0 + 0 + 1 | 3 | 3 |
| Ancient set | 0 + 0 + 0 + 1 | 3 | 3 |
| Divine Helms (Vah Ruta, Rudania, Medoh, Naboris) | 0 + 0 + 0 + 1 | 4 | 4 |
| Total | 88 |
If you only want the armor you actually wear, the budget is much smaller: the Ancient set and the set of the Wild need 3 each, all at the last star. The hero sets are on the amiibo armor page, and the full list of other materials is in upgrade materials.
Should you cook or sell spare fragments?
Sell them if you have more than you need. A shop pays 300 rupees.
- Cooking: a Star Fragment in a dish guarantees a critical success, the same as a dragon part. On its own it makes Dubious Food.
- Selling food: in the price of a cooked dish a Star Fragment counts as only 1 rupee, so cooking it never adds value. See recipes to sell.
For other ways to earn rupees, see rupee farming. The sequel’s version of this guide is Tears of the Kingdom Star Fragment farming.
