BotW Octoroks: All 6 Types, HP, Drops and Locations
Every Octorok in Breath of the Wild, from Water to the Master Mode Sky Octorok: HP, drop rates, Rock Octoroks and rusty weapons, and a map of all 227 spawns.
The game describes Octoroks as low-level, “octopus-like monsters”, and Breath of the Wild has six kinds, one of them only in Master Mode. This page shows how to recognize each one, gives their HP and drops from the game’s data, explains how a Rock Octorok turns rusty gear into new weapons, and maps all 227 Normal Mode spawns. For the other monster families see the enemy overview; the Tears of the Kingdom Octoroks have their own page.
Which Octoroks are in Breath of the Wild?
| Octorok | HP | Habitat | How it hides and attacks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Water Octorok | 8 | Rivers, swamps, lakes and coasts | Lurks in the water, spits rocks |
| Forest Octorok | 8 | Woods and grassland | Poses as grass or a shrub, ducks into the ground when you get close |
| Rock Octorok | 8 | Volcanic areas | Inhales, then spits flaming rocks; the breath can suck in weapons or bombs |
| Snow Octorok | 8 | Snowfields | Poses as snowfield grass, spits snowballs |
| Treasure Octorok | 8 | Deep sand and snow | Buries itself under a fake treasure chest |
| Sky Octorok (Master Mode) | 8 | In the air | Holds up floating monster fortresses; never attacks |
HP comes from the game’s parameter files and the descriptions from its Hyrule Compendium entries.
What is a Water Octorok like?
The base kind spends most of its time in water. The game adds an odd detail: when it rains, the drop in air pressure inflates an air sac inside it and lifts it into the air. Its rocks “can be bounced back with a shield”. Normal Mode places 56, most in the Faron (15) and Lanayru (14) Tower regions; Floria River has five and Mido Swamp four.
What is a Forest Octorok like?
A Forest Octorok is an aquatic species that “adapted to life in the forest”, hiding “as grass or unassuming shrubbery” and attacking when someone wanders by. At 91 spawns it is by far the most common kind. Rok Woods and Thundra Plateau have 15 each, Guchini Plain nine, and Tingel Island seven.
What is a Rock Octorok like?
Rock Octoroks live in volcanic regions. The game says that when they inhale “they’re preparing to spit out flaming rocks but have been known to suck up weapons or bombs in the same breath”. That breath is the source of their most useful trick, described below. Of 39, 35 are in Eldin: ten around Eldin’s Flank, seven on the Isle of Rabac and four in Lake Darman.
What is a Snow Octorok like?
Snow Octoroks live in snowy fields, disguise themselves as grass and attack by spitting snowballs. They are the rarest kind in Normal Mode: just four, two on Rutimala Hill and two on Vatorsa Snowfield, both in the Gerudo Tower region.
What is a Treasure Octorok like?
Treasure Octoroks bury themselves in deep sand or snow, disguised as treasure chests, and attack anyone who comes close. The game gives away the trick: “The treasure chests are not magnetic, which proves that they are actually a part of these monsters’ bodies.” So if Magnesis cannot pick up a half-buried chest, it is an Octorok. Of 37, 17 are in the Gerudo Tower region (Risoka Snowfield alone has six) and five in the Wasteland Tower region.
What is a Sky Octorok?
Sky Octoroks appear only in Master Mode, the harder mode from the first DLC pack. Their air sacs let them float, and the game says other monsters take advantage of this, “using them to make floating fortresses”; they are “trained to ascend when they hear a whistle, but they will not attack”. The game places 609 of them, all marked Master Mode only. Their drop table is empty.
How do you beat Octoroks?
- Any decent hit works. With 8 HP, a weapon or arrow that deals 8 or more kills an Octorok in one hit.
- Return the rocks. The game’s own tip for the Water Octorok: raise your shield and the rock bounces back at it.
- Mind the Rock Octorok’s breath. It can suck in weapons and bombs while inhaling, so do not throw your good weapon at one.
- Check chests with Magnesis. A buried chest it cannot lift is a Treasure Octorok.
What do Octoroks drop?
| Octorok | Drops |
|---|---|
| Water, Forest, Rock, Snow Octorok | ×2–3 at Octorok Tentacle 25%, Octo Balloon 50%, and 25% an item the data does not name; Octorok Eyeball ×1–2 at 10% |
| Treasure Octorok | ×3–5 rupees (Green 40%, Blue 20%, Red 5%, Purple 1%, Silver 0.5%); ×2–3 at Octorok Tentacle 30%, Octo Balloon 70%; Octorok Eyeball ×1–2 at 10% |
| Sky Octorok (Master Mode) | Nothing |
“×2–3” means two or three rolls, and a percentage is the chance per roll. These are the game’s Normal drop tables.
- Octo Balloon: an “inflatable Octorok organ” with “a lot of lift”. Hold it and place it on an object, and the object floats up. It is a quick way to shift a stone slab, as at the entrance of Kah Mael Shrine and under the base of Faron Tower (see Sheikah Towers).
- Octorok Tentacle: “too acidic for cooking”, but valued for elixirs.
- Octorok Eyeball: goes into elixirs or sells to a shop, and the game hints it “may have other uses”.
All three are monster parts for elixirs; the critter you cook them with sets the effect. See all recipes.
How does a Rock Octorok renew rusty weapons?
Put a rusty weapon or shield on the ground near a Rock Octorok instead of throwing it. When it inhales it sucks the item in and spits out a new one: the clean Hylian equivalent, and the further you are into the game, the more likely a Knight’s or Royal version instead of a Traveler’s or Soldier’s.
The weapon durability page has the full list of rusty items.
Where do Octoroks live?
Normal Mode places 227 Octoroks. Two more records sit on exactly the same spot as another and are counted once; the 609 Sky Octoroks are Master Mode only and are not on the map.
