The Hylian Shield in Breath of the Wild is in the Lockup under Hyrule Castle. Defeat the Stalnox that guards the room and a chest with the shield appears. If the shield later breaks, Granté in Tarrey Town sells another for 3,000 rupees.

Where is the Hylian Shield?

In the Lockup, the prison on the west side of Hyrule Castle. No quest is needed, and you can go there long before you are ready for the rest of the castle.

The in-game map: the Lockup and the West Passage on the castle side, the Castle Town Prison across the moat.

The usual way in is the West Passage:

  1. Cross the moat west of the front gate. Use Cryonis blocks, or take the raft by the Castle Town Prison across with a Korok Leaf.
  2. Find the tunnel marked with Luminous Stone. It leads toward the Lockup.
  3. Get past the gate. A Decayed Guardian watches the entrance. Raise the portcullis with a Cryonis block underneath, or slip in through the break in the Lockup wall.

The other ways into the castle are on the Hyrule Castle walkthrough.

How do you beat the Stalnox and open the chest?

The Stalnox is a skeleton Hinox with 1,000 HP. Shoot its eye to knock it down and hit it while it lies there. As long as the eye is intact it keeps getting back up, so finish by destroying the eye. More on the Hinox page.

Once it falls, a metal chest appears in the back room. Open it for the Hylian Shield.

What are the Hylian Shield’s stats?

Guard 90 and durability 800, both the highest of any shield. The full comparison is on the shields page.

The shield from the chest can come with a bonus; with the stronger Durability Up bonus it reaches up to 1,160 durability. Unlike the Ancient Shield, it does not deflect Guardian beams on its own: you still need a Perfect Guard.

What if the Hylian Shield breaks?

It cannot be repaired — nothing can in Breath of the Wild, as the weapon durability page explains — but it can be replaced. Granté, on a balcony in Tarrey Town, sells the Hylian Shield for 3,000 rupees once the side quest From the Ground Up is complete.

From the Ground Up is Hudson’s quest; it follows Hylian Homeowner in Hateno Village. Both are on the side quests list.

Can you get a second Hylian Shield?

No. The Lockup chest gives one and does not come back, and Granté only offers the shield while you do not have one. You can never hold two.
