Ancient tablets are the stone tablets engraved with ancient Hyrulean in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and they belong to the side adventure Messages from an Ancient Era. There are 13: the first falls from the sky into Lookout Landing, and the other 12 are in the sky, each on its own star-shaped island. Photograph those 12 for Wortsworth and you earn 1,200 rupees and a paraglider fabric.

The table covers the 12 tablets in the sky; the one at Lookout Landing is not in it. The sky island is the nearest named place on the sky map, and the region is that of the nearest shrine. The numbers 1–12 are only the order of the markers on this page, there to match the launch points below. They are not official numbers: the game only tells you how many tablets you still need, and you can take them in any order.

Once you activate the local Skyview Tower, the islands show up on the sky map. Zoom in and look for a small star-shaped platform sitting on its own.

Where do you launch from for each tablet?

The simplest route is always to launch from the nearby Skyview Tower and glide across. Numbers match the table above.

How do you complete Messages from an Ancient Era?

  1. Start the quest. After clearing any one temple in Regional Phenomena, return to Lookout Landing, where a stone tablet has fallen from the sky. Talk to Wortsworth in front of it. He says his notes on ancient Hyrulean are at the research lab in Kakariko Village, and he sets off for the village in the southeast.
  2. Go to Kakariko Village. Find Wortsworth again at the research lab. He has read the first tablet: its author means to tell the royal family’s daily life in 13 parts, so there are 12 more tablets out there.
  3. Photograph a tablet. You need the Camera; if you do not have it yet, do Camera Work in the Depths first. Stand in front of the tablet, open the Camera, aim at the engraved panel in the middle, and shoot once the label “Tablet in ancient Hyrulean” appears. Save the picture to your album.
  4. Show it to Wortsworth. Talk to him at the lab and choose “Here’s a picture.” You can hand in as many pictures as you have in one visit, so there is no need to go back after every tablet.

Aim at the engraved panel in the middle of the tablet. The picture only counts once the Camera names the subject.

You do not photograph the Lookout Landing tablet: Wortsworth copied the inscription before he left, and a sketch of it stands in the lab. The quest log keeps count of how many tablets you still need to capture.

What are the rewards?

  • Each tablet: one Silver Rupee (100 rupees). That is 1,200 rupees for all 12, paid only once.
  • All tablets handed in: the Zonai Survey Team Fabric. It is a fabric for the paraglider, given, as Wortsworth puts it, in recognition of your work as an honorary member of the survey team.

At the research lab in Kakariko Village: every tablet picture you hand in earns a Silver Rupee.

For every picture, Wortsworth reads the inscription aloud, gives his own reading of it, and then hangs a copy on the lab wall, where you can come back and read it whenever you like.

What do the tablets say?

Together the 13 tablets are the diary of a royal chamberlain, an account of the royal family’s everyday life at the time of Hyrule’s founding: King Rauru, Queen Sonia, the king’s elder sister, and a princess named Zelda. None of it is in the history books, and the details are best read for yourself. For the main story of that era, pair them with the Dragon’s Tears.

FAQ

How many ancient tablets are in Tears of the Kingdom?
13. The first one lands in Lookout Landing and Wortsworth copies it himself; the 12 you have to photograph are all in the sky.
How do you start Messages from an Ancient Era?
Clear any one of the four regional temples, then go back to Lookout Landing, where a tablet has fallen from the sky, and talk to Wortsworth beside it. He leaves for the research lab in Kakariko Village; talk to him again there and the quest sends you after the other tablets.
Can you still photograph a tablet after it falls?
Yes. A few of the platforms break loose as soon as you step on them and the tablet comes to rest directly below, one of them down a chasm in the Depths. Follow it down and the picture still counts.
What is the reward for all the stone tablets?
Each tablet picture earns a Silver Rupee (100 rupees), 1,200 rupees for all 12. When you hand in the last one, Wortsworth also gives you the Zonai Survey Team Fabric.
