TotK Battery Upgrades: Energy Wells, Costs and Max

How to upgrade the Energy Cell in Tears of the Kingdom: where to get Crystallized Charges, where the Crystal Refineries are, what Energy Wells cost and the max.

Your Energy Cell powers every Zonai device you build with. It starts small: three Energy Wells, enough for a short flight. This page covers how to grow it, from mining Zonaite to the refinery where a Steward Construct fits each new Energy Well, what every step costs, and where the maximum is.

How far can you upgrade the Energy Cell?

Energy Wells at the maximum48

Cost from 3 to 484,500 Crystallized Charges
Energy Wells per segment of the gauge3

The game text puts it plainly: the Steward Construct at the refinery says an Energy Cell has 45 slots for expansion. The first 24 wells fill the eight segments; from the 25th on, each new well turns part of a segment blue, and a blue segment holds twice as much. At 48 all eight segments are blue.

What does each battery upgrade cost?

Every Energy Well costs the same 100 charges, so the price only adds up. Each row is one more full segment of the gauge.

In Zonaite, one Energy Well is 300 Zonaite or 15 Large Zonaite traded at a Forge Construct; the whole 4,500 is 13,500 Zonaite or 675 Large Zonaite.

How much are the different charges worth?

ItemWorthWhere it mostly comes from
Crystallized Charge1Forge Constructs (3 Zonaite each), enemies in the Depths
Large Crystallized Charge20Forge Constructs (3 Large Zonaite each), Depths chests, loose in the Depths, Frox
Huge Crystallized Charge100Guarded chests in the Depths

The game adds all three straight into one total: its item text says a Large Crystallized Charge is “equal to 20 normal crystallized charges” and a Huge one “equal to 100”.

How do you upgrade the Energy Cell?

  1. Mine Zonaite in the Depths. The Mining Cave on Great Sky Island has a little Zonaite, but the Steward Construct warns it is not enough for even one Energy Well. The Depths have far more, and every Frox carries Zonaite ore on its back that drops Zonaite and sometimes Large Zonaite.
  2. Wake a Forge Construct. The ten in the Depths stand at abandoned mines and are dormant until you activate them with your right arm; at several you first have to drive off the Yiga Clan members camped there.
  3. Trade the ore for charges. Three Zonaite buy one Crystallized Charge and three Large Zonaite buy one Large Crystallized Charge. Large Zonaite goes much further: 15 of them pay for a whole Energy Well.
  4. Collect loose charges in the Depths. Pick up Large Crystallized Charges lying on the ground, open stone Zonai chests and beat enemies; the table below counts them.
  5. Go to a Crystal Refinery. Travel to Great Sky Island or to the refinery just north of Lookout Landing and talk to the Steward Construct.
  6. Trade 100 charges per Energy Well. Each well takes 100 charges from your total; come back with more until you reach 48.

Where do you find Crystallized Charges in the Depths?

The game’s placement data has these Large and Huge Crystallized Charges in the Depths:

WhereLarge Crystallized ChargesHuge Crystallized Charges
Lying on the ground500
Stone Zonai chests490
Chests guarded by the Yiga Clan (open once they are beaten)374
Other chests that open once the nearby enemies are beaten012

Enemies in the Depths also drop Crystallized Charges. A Frox drops one or two Large Crystallized Charges when beaten, and each of the temple bosses’ rematches in the Depths is said to drop a Huge Crystallized Charge. The Frox page maps all 40.

Where are the Crystal Refineries and Forge Constructs?

Above the Depths there are two Crystal Refineries and one Forge Construct. Coordinates are X, Y as the in-game map shows them.

What happens when the Energy Cell is maxed?

Once you have all 48 Energy Wells, the Steward Constructs at the refineries stop making wells and instead trade Crystallized Charges for any Zonai device you choose: 3 charges for most devices, 30 for a Big Battery. That makes the refinery the one place to pick exactly the device you want; the Zonai devices page lists them all.

How does the Energy Cell recharge?

  • By itself. A Steward Construct on Great Sky Island explains that the Energy Cell refills whenever no Zonai device is using it.
  • With a Zonai Charge. Using one from the menu restores a little energy.
  • With a Large Zonai Charge. Using one keeps the Energy Cell from draining for a short time, going by the game’s item text.

FAQ

How many Crystallized Charges do you need to max the battery?
4,500. Each Energy Well costs 100 Crystallized Charges and you can add 45 wells to the 3 you start with. A Large Crystallized Charge counts as 20 and a Huge one as 100.
What is the maximum battery in Tears of the Kingdom?
48 Energy Wells. The first 24 fill the eight segments of the battery gauge (three wells per segment); the next 24 turn those segments blue, doubling each one.
Where do you upgrade the Energy Cell?
At either of the two Crystal Refineries: one on Great Sky Island next to Nachoyah Shrine, one just north of Lookout Landing. A Steward Construct makes the Energy Wells.
How do you turn Zonaite into Crystallized Charges?
Give it to a Forge Construct. Three Zonaite buy one Crystallized Charge, and three Large Zonaite buy one Large Crystallized Charge (worth 20). There is one Forge Construct on Great Sky Island and ten at abandoned mines in the Depths.
