How many Hinox are in Tears of the Kingdom?

69 counting all four kinds: 17 Hinox, 15 Blue Hinox, 17 Black Hinox and 20 Stalnox. Game8 also gives 69 for the Hinox Monster Medal; Zelda Dungeon says 68.

Do Depths Hinox count for the Hinox Monster Medal?

Yes. The medal count of 69 only adds up with the 29 Depths spawns included: the surface, Hyrule Castle and caves hold 40.

Why did I not get the Hinox Monster Medal after beating every Hinox?

Before update 1.4.3 (February 2026) the Black Hinox in Hyrule Castle could stay marked as undefeated after you beat it, which blocked the medal. Nintendo says downloading the update lets you get the medal.

How do you beat a Hinox fast?

Shoot its eye with an arrow. It falls onto its back and cannot attack, so run in and hit it until it gets up, then repeat. Below half health it covers the eye with its hand; wait for it to attack and shoot again.

The counts come from the game’s own placement data as published by zeldamods’ radar for objmap-totk. The total matches Game8’s number for the Hinox Monster Medal (69). Zelda Dungeon’s medal page says 68. Game8’s Hinox map shows 40, which is the count without the Depths.

Three of these caves sit close together in Necluda: Rodai Lakefront Tunnel (Hinox), Corta Lake Cave (Blue Hinox) and Calora Lake Cave (Black Hinox), all within about 400 units of each other. The Stalnox in caves, as in the Depths, is there at any time of day.

The Depths mirror the surface, so each row names the landmark on the surface directly above. In 13 of the 29 cases a surface Hinox stands at the same X, Y: the Depths Hinox under Trilby Plain, Upland Lindor, Dracozu River, Jia Highlands, Malin Bay, Meadela’s Mantle, Hebra North Crest, Aris Beach, Bubinga Forest, Mable Ridge, Giant’s Forest, Squabble River and Lake Totori. Beat one and drop down the nearest chasm for the other.

How do you beat a Hinox?

Every kind has the same weak spot, one big eye.

Run in while it is down and hit it until it stands up again, then back off and repeat. Attacks on a knocked-down Hinox are where almost all the damage comes from.

If it closes in before you can aim, run between its legs and come out behind it: it turns slowly, which buys you time to aim again. Do not stay under it, though, or it drops onto you with a butt slam.

At about half health it starts covering the eye with its hand. Wait for it to swing at you, which uncovers the eye, and shoot then.

Leg armor changes what you can do with its feet. The game describes Blue Hinox greaves as ones that “can be burnt away to expose their feet”, so fire works on wooden greaves. Black Hinox wear “metal greaves that are too hard to break”. Game8 suggests shocking metal greaves with electric attacks to stun it for extra hits.

Can you steal weapons from a sleeping Hinox?

Yes. In the game’s own words, “a deft hand can steal weapons from the necklaces they wear”. Red, Blue and Black Hinox all carry weapons on a necklace, and a sleeping one is the chance to take them without a fight.

Sneaky food or elixirs help it stay asleep; see the Sneaky effect in best recipes. Anything left on the necklace drops when you beat the Hinox anyway.

Hinox horns can be fused to a weapon to raise its attack power, as the item description says. A Black Hinox is the one sure source of Hinox Guts: 100%, against 50% for a Blue Hinox and 10% for a red one.

How do you get the Hinox Monster Medal?

Finish one of the monster-control crew’s side adventures at Lookout Landing, such as Bring Peace to Hyrule Field. After that, Gralens in the Emergency Shelter offers the big-monster quests (Game8).
Pick “How about big monsters?” and “Unusual monsters?”. One of the quests is WANTED: Hinox: by the game’s quest log, a Hinox near Trilby Plain, northeast of Hyrule Field by Woodland Stable. That is the Trilby Plain row in the surface table.
Beat every Hinox, Blue Hinox, Black Hinox and Stalnox at least once. Once the quests are done, Gralens tells you how many of each kind you still have to beat (Game8).
Go back to Gralens for the medal. The game’s description: “An award presented by the monster-control crew in appreciation for defeating every Hinox in Hyrule.”
