BotW Dragons: Where and When Farosh, Naydra, Dinraal Appear
Where the three dragons fly in Breath of the Wild, when they show up, the best spots to farm Farosh, Naydra and Dinraal, and what every dragon part is for.
Three dragons fly over Hyrule in Breath of the Wild: Dinraal (fire), Naydra (ice) and Farosh (lightning). They cannot be hurt, but an arrow in the right spot knocks off a scale, claw, fang shard or horn shard. This page maps their routes from the game’s own rail data, explains when they appear, and lists the best farming spots and every use of the parts.

Each point is a point of the rail the dragon follows, numbered in flying order; the filter picks one dragon. Farosh has three separate routes, labelled in the point details.
| Dragon | Route, in flying order | Where it flies low enough to shoot |
|---|---|---|
| Dinraal | High over the Spring of Power and the Akkala Wilds, then down near the Eldin Great Skeleton, west along the Deplian Badlands, past the Forgotten Temple, into Tanagar Canyon and along it past the Tabantha Great Bridge, then up into the sky over the Rayne Highlands | Eldin Great Skeleton, Deplian Badlands and all of Tanagar Canyon |
| Naydra | One loop: Mount Lanayru and the Spring of Wisdom, Lanayru Road - East Gate, Lanayru Bluff, Lanayru Promenade, the West Gate, Rabia Plain, Lanayru Bay, Wintre Island and back up the mountain | Lanayru Promenade and Lanayru Bay |
| Farosh (Lake Floria) | Out of Riola Spring, down past Floria Falls and under Floria Bridge to Rassla Lake, then the same way back | The whole route |
| Farosh (Lake Hylia) | Out of the lake and round it, passing Hylia Island and the Bridge of Hylia | The whole route |
| Farosh (Gerudo Highlands) | Around Gerudo Summit, Risoka and Vatorsa Snowfield and the Yiga Clan Hideout | Near Gerudo Summit |
The rail data gives Dinraal an altitude of 1,200 over Akkala and 180 to 280 inside Tanagar Canyon; Naydra flies between 150 and 764 and Farosh between 57 and 810. The two lake routes of Farosh have their own starting rails, so it rises out of the water at a fixed spot; the Gerudo route and the other two dragons have none, so they appear somewhere along the route rather than at a fixed spot.
When do the dragons appear?
- Finish Seek Out Impa. No dragon flies before this main quest is done.
- Free Naydra first. On Mount Lanayru Naydra is covered in Malice. Shoot the Malice off during The Spring of Wisdom; only then does it fly its normal loop.
- Wait for the night. The window is roughly 7 PM to 7 AM. Popular times such as midnight at Riola Spring or 5 AM all fall inside it.
- One appearance a day. Each dragon comes once per in-game day. The day turns over at midnight, so two sightings in one night are possible.
Which part drops from where?
| Part | Shoot | Cooking: time added | Sells for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scale | The body | +1:00 | 150 |
| Claw | A claw, arm or leg | +3:00 | 180 |
| Shard of Fang | The mouth | +10:00 | 250 |
| Shard of Horn | A horn | +30:00 | 300 |
Time and price are the game’s own item values and are the same for all three dragons.
Where are the best farming spots?
| Dragon | Where to wait | How it goes |
|---|---|---|
| Dinraal | The ledge over Tanagar Canyon by Maag No’rah Shrine | It comes down into the canyon, so you are above it when you glide off. A faster option: rest at Tabantha Bridge Stable, then ride north along the canyon to meet it |
| Farosh | The cliffs by Riola Spring, above Shoda Sah Shrine | It rises from the spring and follows the waterfall down; parts land in the lake at the bottom, so bring the Zora armor |
| Farosh | The southern towers of the Bridge of Hylia | A good early-game spot on the Lake Hylia route |
| Naydra | Above Lanayru Road - East Gate, or Lanayru Bluff facing the Promenade | It comes down the mountain and through the Promenade between the cliffs |
What are dragon parts used for?
Armor upgrades. The Great Fairies ask for dragon parts on four sets (fountain locations):
| Armor | Dragon parts |
|---|---|
| Cap / Tunic / Trousers of the Wild | Farosh / Naydra / Dinraal: 2 Scales ★1, 2 Claws ★2, 2 Shards of Fang ★3, 2 Shards of Horn ★4 |
| Fierce Deity Boots / Armor / Mask | Farosh / Naydra / Dinraal: 1 Scale ★1, 1 Claw ★2, 1 Shard of Fang ★3, 1 Shard of Horn ★4 |
| Barbarian Armor / Leg Wraps / Helm | 1 Shard of Farosh’s / Naydra’s / Dinraal’s Horn at ★4 |
| Champion’s Tunic | 2 Shards of Farosh’s Horn ★2, Naydra’s ★3, Dinraal’s ★4 |
Full lists: Armor of the Wild, Barbarian set, amiibo sets and upgrade materials.
Cooking. Any part lengthens an elixir or dish by the time in the table; a horn shard reaches the 30-minute cap on its own. See best recipes.
Shrine quests. A scale dropped into the dragon’s spring opens a shrine: Farosh’s into the Spring of Courage for Shae Katha Shrine (The Serpent’s Jaws), Dinraal’s into the Spring of Power for Tutsuwa Nima Shrine (The Spring of Power), and Naydra’s into the Spring of Wisdom. All three are on the shrine quest list.
Selling. Parts sell for 150 to 300 rupees, but horn shards are needed for four armor sets, so keep them until your armor is done.
