Tho Kayu Shrine Guide: Beat the Molduga & Light the Four Torches

Where is Tho Kayu Shrine?

Head to the Toruma Dunes in the Gerudo Desert, within the Wasteland region — the shrine hides south of where the words ‘Toruma Dunes’ appear on your Sheikah Slate map. The site is a wide, circular patch of flat sand ringed by four small rock outcrops. Nothing shrine-shaped is visible on arrival: the shrine is initially buried beneath the sand, and the spot is jealously guarded by a Molduga — an overworld boss that won’t hesitate to destroy you from underground. You are probably here for the ‘Medicinal Molduga’ sidequest, but if you happened upon this area by chance, don’t pass up the opportunity to reveal this shrine.

What should you bring?

Nothing is required inside the shrine itself — the trial ‘Tho Kayu’s Blessing’ has no puzzles or enemies. Outside, you need the Remote Bomb Rune (already on your Slate) and your strongest melee weapon; attack-boosting armor and/or food makes the Molduga fight noticeably faster. Bring a way to light the four torches as well. If you haven’t finished the ‘Medicinal Molduga’ sidequest, plan to keep one Molduga Guts from this fight.

How do you solve Tho Kayu Shrine?

The real trial happens entirely outdoors: a Molduga guards the arena, and the shrine only rises from the sand once all four torches on the surrounding rocks are lit. Despite the difficulty, this shrine has no official Shrine Quest — the guide even jokes it ‘should have been’ one.

1. Arrive at the Sand Arena

Arrive at the circular flat arena in Toruma Dunes — four small rock outcrops ring the open sand, and there is no sign of a shrine because it is buried underground.

Step onto the sand and the Molduga reacts: once it senses you, boss music kicks in and its HP bar appears. It tracks your footsteps to find you and will erupt from beneath your feet for heavy damage before going back underground, so don’t linger in the open.

2. Defeat the Molduga

Climb onto one of the rock outcrops. From the rocks the Molduga can’t hear you, so it can’t work out where you are.

From your outcrop, throw a Remote Bomb out onto the sand. The Molduga will investigate it and try to attack it, flicking the bomb up into the air.

Detonate the bomb right as the Molduga throws it up. The blast topples the beast — it falls immobile and confused.

Sprint down and unload your strongest weapon on the downed Molduga — a charged spinning attack gives the highest damage output, and attack-boosting armor and/or food speeds the kill up further.

Watch for the Molduga to twitch as it regains its orientation — retreat to the outcrop before it recovers, or it will whack you with its body and disappear back underground.

Rinse and repeat — outcrop, throw the bomb, detonate at the toss, run in and attack, retreat to the rocks — until the Molduga’s HP bar empties and it dies.

3. Collect the Loot

Pick up its drops and keep one Molduga Guts if you haven’t completed the ‘Medicinal Molduga’ sidequest; otherwise you would have to defeat another Molduga later.

4. Light the Torches

Now scan the arena: four stationary torches sit on the surrounding rocks.

Light all four torches. Technically you can dodge the Molduga while lighting them — the torches are the only unlock — but killing it first is the safer route.

5. Raise the Shrine

Once the last torch catches, Tho Kayu Shrine rises from the sand. Head inside, where Monk Tho Kayu greets you — ‘By entering this place, you’ve already proven your worth.‘

6. Claim the Blessing

The interior is a single large room with no puzzles and no enemies, just a direct path to the Monk’s Pedestal. Along this path, open the stone Treasure Chest in the center of the room to collect the Golden Bow.

Approach Monk Tho Kayu at the pedestal to receive your Spirit Orb — ‘In the name of Goddess Hylia, I bestow upon you this Spirit Orb’ — then he wishes you well (‘May the Goddess smile upon you’) and fades away.

What do people miss here?

• The shrine doesn’t exist until the torches are lit — arriving to find ‘nothing here’ is normal. It stays buried beneath the sand and only rises once all four torches are burning.
• You can technically skip the boss: the Molduga only needs to be avoided or defeated while you light the torches. It’s risky, because it hunts by sound and can erupt beneath you mid-lighting.
• Fighting from the open sand is the classic mistake — the Molduga locates you by your footsteps. The rock outcrops are your safe ground; return to one between every damage phase.
• If you’re on ‘Medicinal Molduga’, don’t leave without one Molduga Guts from this kill. Walk away empty-handed and you’ll have to find and defeat another Molduga elsewhere.
• Don’t wait for a Shrine Quest marker — Tho Kayu officially has none, even though the Molduga fight plus four torches feel exactly like one.
• Don’t forget the Golden Bow chest in the center of the room before the Spirit Orb — the shrine is just one empty path, and the chest is the only reason to stop and look around.
