How do set bonuses work?
A set bonus switches on when you wear all three pieces of the same set and every piece is upgraded to at least two stars at a Great Fairy Fountain. Each piece keeps its own effect. The Hylian, Soldier’s and Phantom sets have no bonus (the Phantom set only has a hidden effect). Upgrades in Breath of the Wild cost materials only, no rupees.

How many armor pieces are in Breath of the Wild?
107 in this table, counting DLC and amiibo pieces: 47 head pieces, 31 body pieces and 29 leg pieces. 39 are in chests, 26 are sold in shops, 17 come from amiibo and 6 are quest rewards.
Which armor has the highest defense?
The Champion's Tunic, which reaches 32 at four stars. Most upgradeable sets go from 3 to 20; the Ancient and Soldier's sets and the Divine Helms go from 4 to 28.
When does a set bonus switch on?
When you wear all three pieces of a set and each is upgraded to at least two stars. 23 of the 26 sets have one by Zelda Dungeon's count; Game8 counts 22, giving the Gerudo set none.
